Jazz at Lincoln Center to Open a Summer Academy

By ALLAN KOZINN  AUGUST 17, 2014 2:20 PM
Jazz at Lincoln Center is expected to announce on Monday that it will establish the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy, an intensive performance institute for high school musicians. The academy will be based at the Castleton Festival, the classical music and opera festival and summer training program that the conductor Lorin Maazel and his wife, Dietlinde Turban Maazel, founded in 2009 on their farm in Castleton, Va. (Mr. Maazel died in July; Mrs. Maazel has succeeded him as artistic director.)

“We believe in a ‘hands-on’ approach to education and Maestro Maazel shared that belief,” Wynton Marsalis, the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center said in a statement. “We will teach kids to play at the highest level, but we also want the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy experience at Castleton to be transformative and to invite young people into the feeling of jazz.”
