Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was born in Panama, emigrated to New Orleans and then New York City, becoming a legendary pianist/bandleader/arranger/composer and Louis Armstrong’s long-time collaborator and musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering bassist/guitarist/vocalist and holder of advanced degrees from Julliard and Manhattan School of Music, who performed with international Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams and Ruth Brown.

It is no surprise based on her pedigree, Catherine Russell is a one-of-a-kind musician and vocalist. A graduate of American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Catherine toured the world, performing and recording with David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Paul Simon and many others.

In 2012, Catherine Russell won a Grammy Award for her appearance as a featured artist on the soundtrack for the HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire. Her sixth album, Harlem on My Mind, was released in September 2016, on the Jazz Village label and received a Grammy Nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Join vocalist extraordinaire Catherine Russell for an historic walk on the “Sunny Side of the Street” in her long-awaited return to The Appel Room. For the occasion, Russell partners with vocalists Carolyn Leonhart (who has worked with groups as diverse as Steely Dan and Wax Poetic) and La Tanya Hall (associated with Bobby McFerrin, Michael Feinstein, and more).

The talented trio reunites for the first time since their time together on Steely Dan’s 2013 tour to perform Sy Oliver’s own re-arrangements of his most famous tunes, originally written for male vocal trios. These arrangements were lovingly reworked by Oliver himself for a female vocal trio of Catherine Russell, her late mother, Carline Ray, and Oliver’s late wife, Lillian Clark.

The updated music, including songs like “Ain’t She Sweet,” “Cheatin' on Me,” and “Opus One,” was performed only once by the original trio. Russell's all-star ensemble joins the show, featuring guitarist Matt Munisteri, pianist Mark Shane, bassist Tal Ronen, drummer Mark McLean, trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist John Allred, and Evan Arntzen on reeds. Tonight, you will experience this rare personal treasure of re-crafted classics, continuing a musical legacy intimately connected to both the arranger and Russell’s own personal heritage.

Catherine Russell is a lady born to music. Her father, Luis Russell (1902-63), was Louis Armstrong's orchestra leader beginning in the mid-1930s. Her mother, Carline Ray, is a bassist, singer, great all-around musician and a member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the 1940s all-woman band that swung as hard as the men. "This Daughter of Jazz Is One Cool Cat," reads the headline of Nat Hentoff's profile for The Wall Street Journal.

Catherine brought it all to the Kennedy Center's 2010 Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival: a classic voice, in-the-pocket delivery and old songs including two by Mary Lou Williams herself. (Catherine's mother worked in Williams' band.)

In "We the People," lyricist Andy Razaf (1895-1973) speaks for voters: "We don't give a rap about tax-a-tion, long as legislators give the na-tion syn-co-pa-tion." "My Man's an Undertaker" was recorded by the Queen,Dinah Washington (1924-63). "Quiet Whiskey," from Wynonie Harris (1915-69), is the story of a bottle on the shelf. From the preamble, the story is told: "Things were fine 'til they took you down, opened you up and passed you around."

After Virginia Mayhew moved from San Francisco to New York in 1987, she won the Zoot Sims Scholarship at The New School, where, in her words, "I got to meet and study with the living legends of my record collection." She's been a busy saxophonist ever since. Among other gigs, she musically directs the Duke Ellington Legacy group led by Duke's grandson, Edward Kennedy Ellington II, whom she met in karate class. Mayhew has a black belt; she has stamina. The Kennedy Center and the U.S. Dept. of State twice sent her abroad as an official Jazz Ambassador, first to the former Soviet states and then to Southeast Asia.

For this set, Mayhew transcribed recordings in the Mary Lou Williamscollection at the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University in Newark, N.J. The research put Mayhew on the course for a new project, "Mary Lou Williams: The Next Hundred Years," from Virginia Mayhew.

New York native vocalist Catherine Russell, will be the final performance of the 2011-12 season Jazz at Lincoln Center'sSingers Over Manhattan series in The Allen Room, March 30-31, 2012 at 7:30pm & 9:30pm. Born of music royalty, her father, Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong's long time musical director and her mother, Carline Ray, performed with Mary Lou Williams andInternational Sweethearts of Rhythm. In 2006 her hit debut album Cat, paved the way for headlining jazz festivals and opening for music legends like Steely Dan and Paul Simon. With her fourth and newest album Strictly Romancin' released on Valentine's Day and a recent GRAMMY® nomination, there is no stopping her.

Russell's repertoire will pay homage to her father and Louis Armstrong, incorporating a reinvention of jazz and swing collaborations with a ten piece orchestra including Jon Erik-Kellso(trumpet), John Allred (trombone), Andy Farber (saxophone, arranger), Dan Block (saxophone, clarinet), Matt Munisteri (guitar, banjo, Music Director), Mark Shane (piano), Lee Hudson (bass), and Mark McLean (drums). Catherine Russell’s musical prowess transcends genre. Accordingly, Cat, Ms. Russell’s 2006 debut album, on Harmonia Mundi’s World Village imprint, showcases a mature, one of a kind, vocalist, who defies easy categorization. Her singing encompasses jazz balladry, bordello blues, dance hall swing, jump blues, country, pop, and soul. Catherine Russell embodies the deepest heart of American music in a single voice.

A native New Yorker, Catherine was born in 1956 with an enviable jazz pedigree. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a pioneering pianist, composer, and bandleader who sat at the center of several of the seminal bands of 20th century American jazz and popular music. In 1935, Louis Armstrong, a fellow transplant from New Orleans to New York, named Luis Russell as his musical director and Russell's orchestra as his backing group. Catherine's mother, Carline Ray, is an outstanding bassist and vocalist and holder of advanced degrees from Julliard and Manhattan School of Music. Carline has performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis.
Ms. Russell attended the High School of Music and Art and later graduated with honors from American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Professional singing opportunities soon beckoned. Catherine toured Europe singing gospel music with a group fronted by Carrie Smith including Catherine's mother Carline Ray on bass.
Returning to New York City, Catherine sang blues and soul with Jimmy Vivino's Little Big Band where she met Donald Fagen in the fall of 1989. Soon after, Catherine joined Donald Fagen, performing in the N.Y. Rock N Soul Revue, which also included Boz Skaggs, Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow and Chuck Jackson. When Donald Fagen returned to Steely Dan for tours of the U.S. and Japan, Catherine Russell came along as a backing vocalist. Catherine's growing reputation as a versatile and expressive singer led to a call from Paul Simon and a month long run in 1992 at the Paramount Theater in New York. Every night Catherine had the thrill to step out on a vocal duet with Paul Simon along with gospel legends The Mighty Clouds of Joy on "Slip Slidin' Away".
Today, Catherine Russell lives in Manhattan, her apartment walls adorned with the gold and platinum records on which she appears. She toured the globe with David Bowie as a vocalist and multiinstrumentalist on the hugely successful and critically acclaimed “A Reality Tour”, which earned the 1 top-grossing tour for the first half of 2004, according to Billboard. In addition, Ms. Russell has performed or recorded with a dizzyingly impressive array of trend setting artists, including Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, Michael Feinstein, Madonna, Al Green, J. Geils Band, Dolly Parton, and Isaac Hayes, among others. Catherine has also joined the faculty as Associate Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities – a genuine jazz and blues singer – who can sing virtually anything. Her voice is full blown feminity incarnate; a dusky, stalwart and soulful instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable. Bach, Bernstein, Handel, Ravel, Ellington, Gershwin...and of course Garcia/Hunter!!! I love opera, gospel, early music on traditional instruments, Irish and American string band music, Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Voices I love (can't name them all)...Nancy Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, Ruth Brown, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Michael Feinstein, Al Green, Levon Helm, Oumou Sangare, Habib Koite, David Byrne, David Bowie, Willie Nelson, James Brown, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Stanley Brothers, Charlie Rich. I've saved most of my concert ticket stubs from the days when concerts were anywhere from $1 to $5...ah those were the days! But these are the days too...and I must say THIS!
