Why get off the ship when there’s great jazz music on board? Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Arturo Sandoval and guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli will each headline Seabourn cruises that sail in November.

The two will perform live to intimate crowds on the luxury line known for its all-suite ships, which feature no more than 300 staterooms.


Sandoval, who plays trumpet and piano, will appear on a 24-day journey from Miami to Buenos Aires. The cruise stops in many Caribbean ports, including the British Virgin Isles, Saint Barthelemy and Barbados before heading to ports in Brazil and Uruguay. It sails Nov. 5. Prices start at $5,499, based on double occupancy. It excludes $604 in port fees and taxes.

Arturo Sandoval and his band will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater.

A 10-time Grammy winner, Sandoval was a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie. He received an Emmy Award in 2006. In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world, and continues to do so.

CELESTE HEADLEE, HOST: Now we take a moment to highlight and salute another artist. Jazz-great Arturo Sandoval received the Presidential Medal of Freedom this week from President Obama. Sandoval was born and raised in Cuba, where he was once jailed just for listening to jazz music. So he packed up his trumpet and moved to the United States. A country he says gave him the freedom to fill the air with his music. Here's what the president said about him at the ceremony.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Today, Arturo is an American citizen and one of the most celebrated trumpet players in the world. There isn't any place on Earth where the people don't know about jazz, he says. And that's true in part because musicians like him have sacrificed so much to play it.

HEADLEE: And play it he did. Here he is playing with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie on his 1982 tune "Wheatleigh Hall."

Born in 1949 in Cuba, Arturo Sandoval — with Chucho Valdes and Paquito D'Rivera — belonged to the legendary band Irakere in the '70s. The band featured virtuoso improvisers, copious Latin percussion, synthesizers, vocals and tropical heat. Irakere's innovations won it a Grammy in 1980.

Ten years later, at 40, Sandoval defected, his dramatic story documented in the film For Love or Country. Now, he's based in Miami with his trumpet, keyboards and scat vocals, as well as works all over the world — except in Cuba.

Working up a hot sweat after "Havin Fun,'" Sandoval takes off his jacket. He loves playing for a good audience, and shares with it his concern that young people aren't learning enough about jazz. Then he plays "La Gloria Eres Tu" by Antonio Mendez, who composed and performed boleros in the 1950s.

Born in 1963, Cyrus Chestnut comes from Baltimore, where he grew up in the Mount Calvary Baptist Church and studied classical piano at the Peabody Institute. After Berklee College, he worked with Betty Carter, the vocalist and bandleader who shaped a generation of talent in her trios in the '80s and '90s. Chestnut is as two-handed as they come, and leading a good band, on this "Spirituals to Swing" set. "Joshua Fit de Battle" is the spiritual; Chestnut's "Soul Food" is the Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers-style swing. And Cyrus’s interpretation of the hymn "How Great Thou Art" leads into "We Fall Down" by Darius L. Brooks.

Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval,"Night in Tunisia"

This was a live recording of Dizzy and friends in Havana in 1985. "Night in Tunisia" was composed by Dizzy in 1942.

In 1n 1985, Dizzy Gillespie returned to Cuba after an absence of 40 years. He was one of the first American jazz musicians to add Afro-Cuban elements to his music, and Cubans to his big band. Most notably, in the 40s, was percussionist, Chano Pozo.

A then-young Arturo Sandoval (trumpet) and Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano) sit in with Dizzy's band. Bari sax player, Sayyd Abdul al-Khabbyr, is remarkable. Walter Davis is on in this number.Great fun!

Sandoval Gets Symphonic

Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval’s new album, Time For Love (Concord Jazz), will feature classical compositions for orchestra and jazz trio. It is slated for a May 11 release.

“It’s been 20 years since I came to live in the United States,” said the Cuban-born Sandoval, “and practically every year, with every record label who’s signed me, I’ve asked to make this style of album. ‘Let me play softly,’ I said. ‘Let me play ballads with big orchestration behind me. Let me hear the violins and violas, the oboes and the flutes. Let me be inspired by a symphonic setting.’”

Jorge Calandrelli worked on the arrangements (which originated with Sandoval playing the tracks at his home studio) and used a synthesizer to suggest the strings. The disc features jazz standards along with interpretations of such classical composers as Maurice Ravel and Astor Piazzolla. Guests include trumpeter Chris Botti and vocalist Monica Mancini.
