Saxophonist Joe Temperley has died

Scottish saxophonist Joe Temperley has died at the age of 86 in New York.
The Fife man played with some of the finest jazz musicians including The Duke Ellington Band, Woody Herman and the Humphrey Lyttleton Band.

One of the most respected jazz saxophonists in the world, Temperley, from Lochgelly in Fife, passed away on Wednesday.

He left Scotland for London in the 1950s and played in Humphrey Lyttelton's band before moving to North America in the 1960s.

Temperley, who started playing the sax when he was 14, took the baritone chair in the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

In recent years he had been a long-serving member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, under Wynton Marsalis.


He visited the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival in 2009.

For 25 years, the baritone saxophone chair of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has been held by a one Joe Temperley. The Scottish musician, now 85, carries tons of credits to his C.V., especially with big bands: Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Clark Terry and — most notably — the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Jazz Night In America visits Jazz at Lincoln Center as the JLCO salutes its elder statesman, featuring Temperley on his favorite Ellington tunes and a new concerto that managing and artistic director Wynton Marsalis dedicated to his longtime colleague.

Bria Skonberg/Victor Goines at The Jazz Standard November 12th "Nouvelle York"

Trumpeter and vocalist Bria Skonberg has had a big year! In the last twelve months, she's released a new album of mostly original material (Into Your Own, Random Act Records) and won a flurry of accolades, including an NYC Bistro Award, Downbeat Rising Star, a sweep of the Hot House Jazz Magazine Fans' Decision Awards for Best Trumpet, Best Female Vocalist, Best Artist and Best Group (Bria Skonberg Quartet). She was featured on the cover of the September issue of Jazz Times and co-produced the successful 2nd annual New York Hot Jazz Festival.  

On Wednesday, November 12th she makes her debut at The Jazz Standard leading a quintet that will feature jazz luminary and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra clarinetist/ saxophonist Victor Goines.  

"I am very excited for this" says Skonberg, "The band is coming off a month of touring, and working on new material and honing our signature sound. I can't explain how much joy it gives me to work with these guys regularly, and I believe that comes through to the audience. Adding Victor to the mix will put it through the roof!"

 Bria has a name for their signature sound: "Nouvelle York."  The band will be harnessing the spirited beat of New Orleans and fusing it with a downtown New York jazz flavor. At the same time, she will stay true to the humble quirkiness of her hometown in Chilliwack, Canada, that boasted its own festival of hot jazz for 20+ years. 

"I want people to leave the show having experienced something fresh and cutting edge, and yet familiar.  Every performance is unique."  

With 15 years of experience performing as a professional trumpeter and vocalist, Skonberg is at the helm of the newfound popularity of vintage jazz. She is putting her own spin on the music with full force, by including original songs and integrating electronic effects.  

"The focus is not on re-creating but re-imagining the music," says Bria, "It's alive and needs to breathe. That's what the giants who created it believed and would have wanted."

Victor Goines is well known as a member of the LCJO and the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Goines first met Skonberg on the West Coast in 2004 and recorded on her first US release "So Is The Day" (Random Act Records 2012). This will be a reunion of the British Columbian trumpeter and the Crescent City reed master. 

The Bria Skonberg Quartet consists of masterful pianist Dalton Ridenhour, drummer Darrian Douglas who spent five years with the Ellis Marsalis Quintet in New Orleans and her longtime conspirator Sean Cronin on bass and vocals.
