Carmen Lundy began her professional career in Miami as a jazz vocalist and composer when there were very few young, gifted and aspiring jazz vocalists on the horizon. Over four decades later, Ms. Lundy is celebrated throughout the world for her vocal artistry and is highly regarded for her jazz innovation. Her 14th album “Soul to Soul” features all original compositions and has been met with great fanfare. She travels to our stage from Los Angeles along with her world renowned quintet for an evening of some of the best jazz this city will ever hear.

Isthmus Jazz Festival 2013 features acclaimed vocalist Carmen Lundy on June 21-22

The Isthmus Jazz Festival will feature nine regional acts on June 21 and 22 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Union Terrace. The headliner is acclaimed vocalist Carmen Lundy, who plays at UW Music Hall on June 22. All the performances are free.

Lundy has been in the top rank of jazz singers since the 1970s, recording a dozen albums as a leader and collaborating with such stellar names as Kenny Barron, Ron Carter and Geri Allen. She holds the stage with her powerful pipes and improvisational flair, but what really sets her apart is her material. Lundy has written dozens of compositions, so expect something more intriguing than the usual evening of standards.

The regional acts perform on the Union Terrace on June 21 (4:30-11:30 p.m.) and 22 (4-11:30 p.m.). The lineup includes the soulful Chicago singer Typhanie Monique, Chicago’s hard-bop group the Mike Frost Project, the Milwaukee sextet We Six, and Madison's swinging Get Down, Mr. Cat! There will be showcases for student talent and late-night sets suitable for dancing.

Singer Carmen Lundy has returned to the scene with an album that can easily be categorized as one of her best yet. With music that is both consistent and a pleasure to listen to, this nine-track collection is entitled ‘Changes’ and features eight original compositions. It is a CD that will charm you, encourage you to dance, sing along and quite simply will brighten your mood. The tracks speak about love from all angles and include themes ranging from love for neighbors and friends, new love and breakups. With a CD launch planned for March 8 – 11 at the Jazz Standard in New York, and another in LA on March 29 and 30, Carmen took time out to speak to JazzReview about the new CD and her upcoming work.

JazzReview: Carmen, thanks so much for taking time to speak to us. In my book, this recording is indeed one of a high caliber. How did the ideas come together for it? What was the inspiration?

Carmen Lundy: Inspiration, well as you can tell, the songs come from a lot of different points of view and I think what happens to me is that I'm always in the discipline of working at my craft in between my performances and travel. I make sure everything stays oiled. It’s a musical experience that never leaves you alone. It is always hovering somewhere, asking you to do something else. I think in this case I had to narrow it down to a few songs, some that I have been performing, you know I like to try out songs on the audience before recording them. That way I can get that instant ‘you-can't-even-pretend’ kind of feedback. It is what it is. So there were a few songs like that, which I had written prior to recording but with the intention that they would be recorded. Certainly the audience helped to determine whether or not it was time to take them into the studio. I had started to record ‘The Night Is Young’ as the first song on the album because I had done a demo back in the late 80s on a cassette tape that my manager at the time had shared with a friend of his who is a disc jockey in London. The disc jockey played the cassette on the air and I guess people heard it! After that I kept getting emails about the song, which they referred to as ‘The Ni Ya’ song (since these are the vowels I sing in the song), from listeners in London. About three weeks before I actually started recording I got another email about the song and that prompted me to include it. I reworked it from the original way I had done it because it didn't feel right. It just felt heavy so I wanted to give it a lighter flavor. I started fooling around with the song on the guitar and it turned out to be what it is now. It's funny how that is, that songs happen when they're supposed to. So yeah, I've been teaching myself to play guitar, and there are a few songs that were born on the guitar such as ‘So Beautiful’, ‘Sleeping Alone’, ‘When Love Surrounds Us’ and ‘Dance the Dance’. Those songs were all written on the guitar and this is a whole new discovery for me. Wow! The whole feeling of how the melodies evolve and kind of jump out is quite different from the way I've experienced writing music from the piano for all these years. So yeah, everything was kind of being in the moment. Then there is the whole idea of taking the songs and adding musicians to them and then asking the musicians to be themselves with the music, not telling them too much of what to do but allowing them to play and to be themselves. That's why we got these really organic and strong performances, because everyone was totally approaching things from both an individualistic and collective way of playing.

Critically Acclaimed Jazz Vocalist/composer Carmen Lundy And Her Trio With The Big Sound Will appear in Ohio's Capital City

Jazz songstress extraordinaire Carmen Lundy and her trio will appear at the Columbus Jazz & Ribs Fest, headlining the North Bank Park Stage of the festival at 9 pm on Friday July 22. The Jazz & Rib Fest is a highly anticipated summertime tradition in Columbus, offering both jazz and rib connoisseurs the finest in music and barbeque for more than thirty years.

Also appearing at this year's Jazz & Ribs Fest will be Dave Koz, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Mark Flugge Quartet. Local favorites Derek DiCenzo, the Teeny Tucker Band, and the Ft. This show will mark Ms. Lundy's first visit to Columbus, Ohio, and the outdoor festival styling of the event promises to make the evening an even more special experience.

There's something about a truly gifted jazz vocalist cutting loose on a summer night, cascades of notes wafting through gorgeous warm dark that delights and sets the senses alight. Plus the family-friendly set-up of the Jazz & Ribs Fest means that old and young alike can share in the special sonic moments that great jazz music provides.

Accompanying Carmen on this performance will be Anthony Wonsey on piano, Kenny Davis on bass, and Jamison Ross on drums. Lundy and her band have become road warriors this past year: appearing in two separate engagements at New York City's famed Blue Note club, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Detroit, Michigan's Institute Of Art, and the Artist's Collective in Hartford, Connecticut, among many others.

This past April found Carmen and the trio on the festival circuit in Europe. Reviewing one of those festival appearances in Bern, Switzerland, critic Tom Gsteiger wrote, “Since Carmen Lundy oscillates between elegance and risk all the time, she is dependent on high-grade and flexible accompaniment. The pianist Anthony Wonsey and the bassist Darryl Hall are classified as all-around post-bop.

The young drummer Jamison Ross is at the beginning of his career. Together they are an awesome trio who kept building the momentum throughout the concert until they could hardly be stopped. Continuing in the tradition of Betty Carter and making no concessions to the spirit of the times, Carmen Lundy stands for pure, undiluted jazz."

Some of the material for her Jazz & Ribs Fest performance will be drawn from Solamante, Lundy's latest project and her eleventh CD release, which found Carmen not only writing and producing the album, but also playing every note of music for the project.

Layering her at times languorous, at times defiant, at virtually all times sublime vocals over the reach of jazz by bringing her own compositions to the table rather than endlessly rehashing the jazz standards of the past—Carmen says, “People expect for me as a jazz singer to bring a personal and individual interpretation to the standards and nine of my 11 CDs include at least one, so it's not like I haven't done them.

But now it's many decades after those songs were written. We're now at the point where there are two or three new generations of people who are interested in our music." Now Wonsey, Davis, Ross, and Lundy combine their talents to expand and refine the ideas and themes presented on Solamente, as well as material from the Live At The Madrid CD and DVD and her earlier releases like 2008's Come Home or 2003's Something To Believe In
