Nigel Kennedy

Monday 25th - Friday 29th March
World-famous virtuoso Nigel Kennedy returns to Ronnie Scott’s next week for 5 nights of fantastic music, dedicated to Polish jazz musician and composer Krsysztof Komeda. As a jazz musician, Komeda was one of the founding fathers of European jazz in the 1960s and was a huge influence on creating an original jazz style in Poland, often described as the Polish school of jazz today. Komeda's seminal album Astigmatic is widely regarded as one of the most important European Jazz albums and marked a shift to a distinctly European sound in jazz. You’ve also probably heard Komeda’s work in the films of Roman Polanski such as Rosemary’s Baby and Knife in the Water. The composer’s iconic scores have gone down in cinematic history as some of the greatest ever composed.

Kat Edmonson’s “vintage pop”

At once dreamy and seductive, poignant and romantic, singer and songwriter Kat Edmonson’s “vintage pop” is like the Great American Songbook meets Turner Classic Movies. Her voice is reminiscent of the silvery, smoky likes of Blossom Dearie. Her inimitable “fresh as a spring bouquet” (New York Times) music has topped the Billboard jazz charts, made her an NPR favorite, and earned multiple film and soundtrack appearances. Simply irresistible.

Critically acclaimed vocalist and songwriter, actor and dancer, Kat Edmonson has played major stages across the United States, Europe and Japan. She’s appeared in major motion pictures, performed on radio and television, and released breaking albums to date. Her newest album, Old Fashioned Gal, is out now on Spinnerette Records. Her tour supporting the full-length album continues with major tour stops throughout the U.S. Of writing Old Fashioned Gal, Edmonson says, “I wrote these songs while holed up in my Brooklyn apartment during the winter of 2016. I had a terrible, reoccurring cold that winter and was often laid up in bed. I’d go back and forth from watching 1930s movies on Turner Classic Movies to working on a song. While writing this album, I realized that I was seeing what looked like scenes from a film in my head—a film not yet made. I ultimately sat down and wrote an entire outline for a screenplay—a musical, of course—with this music, the score. I processed a great deal of self-doubt in order to write this hopeful record. Old Fashioned Galis about believing in yourself even when it seems no one else will.”

Old Fashioned Galwas entirely written and produced by Edmonson with associate production by band member and drummer Aaron Thurston. It was recorded over several sessions throughout the summer and fall of 2016 at Atomic Sound Studios in Brooklyn with Grammy winning engineer Fernando Lodeiro. This is her third time working with twenty-two-time Grammy-winning engineer Al Schmitt who mixed the record at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.

Appropriate for ages 7 and up. All patrons entering the theater require a ticket regardless of age. This includes children and infants. Contact the SMDCAC Box Office for details (786)-573-5300.
