All About Jazz published a nice feature on flautist Andrea Brachfeld this past week, taking a look back at this fine musician’s recorded career. The article goes back and does mini reviews of each album that Brachfeld has released as a leader, combined with small tidbits of historical facts. It’s a good article on an artist that deserves a lot more attention, so nice to see. You can check it out HERE.
Pianist Arturo O’Farrill will receive the 2010 Anthony D. Duke Founder’s Medal for his hard work and contributions to the continued livelihood of Latin Jazz. The medal is presented to individuals “who follow in the tradition of Boys & Girls Harbor’s remarkable founder Anthony “Tony” Drexel Duke by advocating and working to advance the American dream of equal access to quality education cultural enrichment and opportunity for all” - sounds like O’Farrill. The pianist and bandleader that works tirelessly to promote this art form will receive this honor at a ceremony in June - get the full scoop HERE.
Trumpet player Gabriel Alegria and his Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet will be releasing Pucusana independently and they are currently fronting a fund raising drive to support the promotion and distribution of the album. The group will be utilizing a unique fundraising site, Kickstarter, as the home base for their efforts. You can head over and donate as little as $10 to their cause - or as much as you’d like. Each level of contribution comes with an attached reward, ranging from unreleased recordings to a personal concert from the sextet. Thanks to Bobby Sanabria for clarifying some information about Candido Camero for me in relation to this past week’s article. The important conguero arrived in the States in 1946, much earlier than the 1952 date that I attributed in the article. He also gave me some great info about Camero’s contributions to the art form that I’ll be sharing later in the week. I’m once again reminded, we are so lucky to have Sanabria as a major supporter of Latin Jazz!

The past week brought sad news with the passing of Graciela Perez-Grillo, a wonderful singer who brought some amazing performance abilities into the Latin Jazz world. Lots of people are feeling reflective right about now, looking back upon the great musician and person that we knew as Graciela. Here’s a few of the pieces that rose on Graciela over the past few days.
Felix Contreras over at NPR’s A Blog Supreme remembered Graciela fondly with some great stories and a historical overview. There’s some nice videos embedded in the article too - you can check out “Before Celia Cruz or J.Lo, There Was Graciela” HERE.
Music Director at KUVO and all around Cuban music expert Arturo Gomez provides a personal reflection upon Graciela that intertwines his own memories of the singer’s effect upon his life with history over at Jazztimes. It’s a heartfelt tribute that really captures the depth of Graciela’s power - check out “Adios Graciela: The First Lady Of Afro-Cuban Jazz” HERE.
Like many of the great figures in Latin Jazz, Graciela’s life really wasn’t documented to the depth that it should have been; we really don’t know as much as we should about this great musician. Fortunately Berta Jottar took the time to interview Graciela on video, and now, after her passing, the videos have been posted online. This is must-see material - check it out HERE.

Learn to Play Latin Jazz....
The virtuoso bassist and composer Oscar Stagnaro is leading (along with son Paulo) Centrum's March 18-21 Latin Jazz Intensive. If you are a jazz musician looking to master Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, or Caribbean rhythms, you can't ask for a better guide. A native of Lima, Peru, Stagnaro is currently Associate Professor at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he teaches bass and directs the Latin ensembles, and also teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music. He received three Latin Grammy Awards for his recordings with Paquito D’Rivera -- Live at the Blue Note, Brazilian Dreams and Funk Tango.
