Big Bands and Bands That Just Sound Big (Special Podcast)

Eco-Music Big Band album cover (ecomusicbigband.com)

May 10, 2016
From:

For this New Sounds program, all of the works feature larger ensembles, or have the sound of a big band. Listen to music by the 15-, sometimes 16-piece multi-generational big band founded by Fred Ho, and led by Marie Incontrera – the Eco-Music Big Band. There’s also music from Laura Jurd, the English trumpeter/bandleader along with music by the NYC-based trumpeter/bandleader/composer Jon Crowley and his sextet.  Plus, folk and jazz meet recited poetry in music from Scottish percussionist/bandleader Corrie Dick. Listen to his work, “Soar,” featuring poetry by Alice Zawadzki, which lives up to its title.
Listen also to big band music inspired by Ethiopian jazz and in music by French saxophonist Pierrick Pédron and his ensemble. Then there’s more Ethio-jazz-rooted music from the nine-piece Dutch brass band, Jungle By Night, along with an arrangement of a classic 1970’s Ethiopian pop tune from Imperial Tiger Orchestra. Plus, hear a track from Debo Band, who are from the Boston area. Their music looks to Ethopia by way of Japan in “Hiyamikachi Bushi” from their new record coming out May 20, “Ere Gobez.” All that, and more.

Jon Crowley....

Forward-thinking trumpeter and composer, Jon Crowley was born in Malvern PA, a suburb of Philadelphia, in 1982. He began studying the trumpet at age six with Elin Frazier, a student of Carmine Caruso. While in high school he developed an interest in Jazz and began attending local jam sessions and sitting in with various musicians around Philadelphia. Jon spent the next four years attending Muhlenberg College, studying Jazz with Charles Fambrough and John Swana.

After Graduating with his B.A. in Music, Jon went straight to New York City, where he attended NYU, graduating in the Spring of '07; recieving his Masters in Jazz Performance and Composition. While at NYU, Jon studied with Laurie Frink, Kenny Werner, Ralph Alessi, George Garzone, Brian Lynch, Joe Lovano, Don Friedman and Dave Pietro. Jon has played with Charles Fambrough, John Scofield, Lenny Pickett, Chris Potter, Ralph Alessi, Lenny White, Wallace Roney, Eddie Gomez, Badal Roy, and Don Friedman. Jon has performed around New York City at venues such as The BlueNote, 55 Bar and Lincoln Center. Since graduating, he can be seen performing around New York City and the Northeast both as a sideman and with his own groups. Jon has also just released his debut album; 'Connections'.

"While Crowley might not be a household name just yet, this release announces, anoints and validates him as a fine jazz performer, writer and leader. [..] Crowley exibits maturity and a marvelously warm sound. His approach to the instrument is solid, controlled and highly lyrical"- Nicholas Mondello; AllAboutJazz.com
"On the evidence of its debut, 'Connections', Jon Crowley Quintet has huge potential. [..] The band's technical ability is uniformly strong, but technique never takes precedence over an emotional connection with the music--the result is a mature and thoughtful album that belies the youth and relative inexperience of the musicians. [..] This is an impressive debut."- Bruce Lindsay; AllAboutJazz.com
"Connections[..] reveals Crowley to be a formable talent on the rise. His taste leans towards meditative, harmonically deep compositions that create an atmosphere for exploratory solos. [..]- a thoughtful jazz explorer, happy to crest and undulate on waves of harmonic color as he caravans towards the horizon" - AllMusic
"Jon is a very inquisitive individual. He brings a sense of curiosity to his work that is contagious"- John Swana
"Jon is an ambitious, young trumpeter and composer who had a bright future ahead of him. His compositions have a freshness about them due to their interesting harmonies and modern sensibility"- Dave Pietro
