Taiwan-based world music group A Moving Sound combines traditional Chinese instruments and melodic themes with modern compositions, gorgeous vocals and spirited experimentation. Music that is joyous, evocative and enchanting. Starts at 7:30 PM.
Sun Oct 6th Jason Kao Hwang's Burning Bridge
3PM - Pre-concert Talk; 7:30PM - Composition Workshop; With fiery interplay between Chinese & Western instruments, Jason Kao Hwang's Burning Bridge is a dramatic journey of sonic discoveries and sets ablaze the boundaries of cultural identity featuring Mr. Hwang's acclaimed EDGE quartet (Jason Kao Hwang, composer, violin; Andrew Drury, drums; Ken Filiano, string bass; Special Guest: Herb Robertson, trumpet), plus Four (Wang Guowei, erhu; Sun Li, pipa; Steve Swell, trombone; Joe Daley, tuba). Q&A follows the concert. Starts at 4:00 PM.
Sun Oct 6th FOOD WORKSHOP: Preserving the Harvest
For Families: This hands-on workshop demonstrates the basics of canning and lacto-fermentation. Learn to preserve local, seasonal produce in healthful ways. The health benefits of fermentation will be discussed as well as learning about safe food preservation. Starts at 1:00 PM.
Fri Oct 11th NEA Jazz Masters - JAZZ CASSEROLE
Join NEA Jazz Masters Jimmy Heath, Barry Harris and Jimmy Owens, three-time GRAMMY Award-winning bassist Christian McBride, Be-Bop guitarist Russell Malone and Jazz Veteran Drummer Tootie Heath for an evening of blazing melodies, and rhythmic vibes. Starts at 8:00 PM.
Fri Oct 18th Full Moon Drumming Workshop
For Families: Celebrate the Harvest Moon with a drum circle under a full moon in Flushing Town Hall's beautiful garden with master drummers from the Colombian and Korean traditions. Begin with workshops on traditional Korean and Colombian drums then jam with the entire group. Starts at 7:00 PM.
Fri Oct 25th Brian Woodruff's OKB Trio
Featuring drummer Brian Woodruff, pianist Oscar Perez and bassist Kuriko Tsugawa, the OKB trio’s rhythmic acrobatics never compromise their ability to swing their way through the Great American Songbook or dance delicately through Brazilian and Latin standards. Starts at 8:00 PM.
Thu Oct 31st Halloween Re-mixed
For Families: Celebrate Dia de los Muertos, Halloween and All Saints Day with hands-on festive fun for all ages! Be sure to wear your costume and join us for mask making, All Saints Day Medallions, Mexican Sugar Skulls and ghost stories! Starts at 4:00 PM.
