LADY Anne Middleton’s Hotel has become a go-to venue for quality jazz, with music every Thursday and Friday at 8pm, informal dress code and real ale at pub prices. The six-piece Mardi Gras Band will be cherry picking tunes from the jazz greats tonight, while tomorrow night the Harrogate trio Swingplicity will be entertaining with smooth cocktail jazz (01904 611570).

Wakefield Jazz tomorrow has the big name quartet of Julian Arguelles, with flavour-of-the moment Kit Downes on piano (01977 680542). The band continues its Autumn tour on Saturday as part of University of York concert season (01904 322439), where Julian’s Octet was recently ensemble-in-residence at the Heslington campus.

Sunday is a jazz feast in York, beginning at Kennedy’s Café Bar, Little Stonegate, at 1pm with John Marley, Paul Smith and guest (01904 620222). Sunday teatime sees the high-energy Blueflies buzz into the Fulford Arms, Fulford Road (01904 620410), while Karl Mullen (piano) and Jen Low (vocals) will be tossing a coin between two pubs, the Waggon and Horses (01904 637478) and the Rook and Gaskill at 7pm (01904 674067). As the invaluable website jazzinyork.com advises “the pubs are opposite each other on Lawrence Street, so you will find jazz in one of them”.
