Mallu Magalhães, now 17, has already been on the cover of all main Brazilian newspapers, including Folha de S. Paulo, Estado de S. Paulo, Jornal do Brasil and has also featured in Rolling Stone, Istoé and Época among other magazines. In addition, she has become topic of countless blogs, sold out concerts, caught the attention of critics and has reached the staggering figure of over 4.3 million hits at www.myspace.com/mallumagalhaes with 3.5 million users hitting the play button. Not bad for a two-year career.
Mallu Magalhães was the first Brazilian artist to take part in MTV's global project MTV Sessions and her first music video J1 was one of the most requested by spectators.
Mallu first got involved in music at eight, when dad gave her the first guitar. Her first recording - a fifteenth birthday present - took place at Lúcia no Céu studios, where she met her band - Kadu Abecassis (guitar) Jorge Moreira (drums), Thiago Consorti (bass) and Rodrigo de Alencar (piano).
Being a big fan of both Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, Mallu writes and sings in Portuguese (Versinho de número um), English (Tchubarura) and also in French (Il va partir). As a multi-skilled artist, she plays the guitar, the harmonica, the piano, the blow keyboard, and she also makes fashion, draws and paints.
Having sold out gigs all over Brazil, Mallu did a special concert for fashion brand Maria Bonita Extra, at Fashion Rio, one of the main fashion shows in the country. She has also played in Portugal three times, once in the country's biggest festival, the Festival Sudoeste, which also featured Faith No More and Lily Allen. The songs "J1" and "Tchubaruba" were soundtrack to cell phone operator Vivo's national ad campaign.
Mallu has also been praised by trend setters and celebrities all over Brazil. She was a special guest at Jô Soares' talk show and Tom Zé himself said "I listened to Mallu's music and I was really glad. I became her fan".
Invited by Marcelo Camelo (Los Hermanos), Mallu sings and plays guitar in Janta (Marcelo Camelo), track from his debut solo album.
During her July 2008 school break Mallu went into the AR studios in Rio to record her songs on an English EMI analogue mixing board, from the Abbey Road studios, analogue tape recorders and rare 1960s microphones were put back into use to capture this unique atmosphere. Mario Caldato Jr., who's already worked with Jonh Lee Hooker, Beck and Björk, was in charge of production and the album was released independently through the label Agência de Música in November 2008.
In August 2009 Mallu went back into the studio, this time conducted by music producer of renown Kassin (Vanessa da Mata, Caetano Veloso, Adriana Calcanhoto), to record her second album, released in November 2009 by Agência de Música/Sony Music.
Mallu Magalhães does not impress merely for her young age. Her talent and charisma will always play a huge part in this story of success that's just begun.
