Last Week at the Jazzinstitut
The book has arrived! "The book" being the documentation of our last international conference, the 14th Darmstadt Jazzforum, about "Gender and Identity in Jazz" . The 320 page volume contains essays on many aspects of the subject by Jenna Bailey, Christian Broecking, Christopher Dennison, Mario Dunkel, Joy Ellis and Adam Osmianski, Ilona Haberkamp, Nicole Johänntgen, Michael Kahr, Wolfram Knauer, John Murph, Martin Niederauer, Nicolas Pillai, Ilka Siedenburg, Mane Stelzer, Yoko Suzuki, Sherrie Tucker, and Katherine Williams. Wolke Verlag, our publisher, distributes worldwide, thus the book can ordered directly from their web shop – and shipping even to the US takes no longer than four days, the publisher assured me: www.buecher-zur-musik.de . Should you be at the Moers Festival this weekend, you can also buy it directly from the bookseller Raimund Dillmann's book stand.

We received 50 GB of material from the Berlin-based journalist Fritz Klahre, who sent us 47 of his radio shows about jazz which originally aired between 1978 and 1992.
We were saddened by the news of the trombonist Johannes Bauer's death. Johannes who lived in Berlin had a special relationship with Darmstadt. He taught at our annual summer workshop in 2001, and his students were so inspired by his work that they re-invited them every other year for a private workshop for the ensemble that had formed during that week. Bauer has played the Jazzinstitut's concert space a number of times, making sure that the power of his horn was heard into the last corner. We will remember him as a very special musician and human being.
