Artist Profile: Hamid Drake

Hamid Drake (born August 3, 1955) is an American jazz drummer and percussionist who spends a great deal of time touring worldwide. Widely regarded as one of the best percussionists in jazz and avant improvised music, his style incorporates Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to the standard trap set. Drake has collaborated extensively with top free-jazz improvisers. Drake also has performed world music and has had a connection to reggae throughout his career.
Drake has worked with trumpeter Don Cherry, pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Fred Anderson, Archie Shepp and David Murray. His current project, a film,'Inner-Attunement', pairs Drake with bassist, William Parker where they discuss their musical kinship and the shamanistic sound ceremonies they deploy worldwide. It is beautifully crafted and comprehensive look into their music, which becomes a conversation about the substantial lessons we learn in life.
