A six-voice collective, Rajaton is one of the world’s leading small vocal ensembles, with a repertoire that includes everything from Finnish and Irish folk songs to jazz music to covers of songs by The Beatles, Queen, ABBA and David Bowie. They often include beatboxing into their harmonies.
“Our name, Rajaton, it means ‘boundless’ in English, and that’s what we try to be,” bass vocalist Jussi Chydenius told The Telegram on one of the group’s first visits to the province.

“The main thing that we do is to perform music we like ourselves, and (music) that wouldn’t be too difficult, in a sense, to approach, so that people who are not familiar with a cappella music in itself — people who just like to listen to the radio and listen to good songs — would not be pushed away by the sort of sound that we make.”
Rajaton first performed in St. John’s in 2001 as part of Festival 500, earning themselves a standing ovation. Chydenius later said they were surprised by it.
“In Finland, if you get a standing ovation, you have to be a superstar. People are more reserved,” he explained.
