OCEANSIDE — MiraCosta students and faculty in the college’s music department received several significant awards this spring.
The MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra, known as MOJO, was picked as Best Large Jazz Ensemble at Downbeat magazine’s 38th Annual Student Music Awards. Each year the prominent jazz magazine with an 81-year history and worldwide following, picks the best student bands from around the country in various categories.
The bands submit recordings, which are evaluated by a panel of internationally recognized jazz performers and educators. The jazz repertory big band started up five years ago and is directed by Steve Torok. The band is scheduled to play at the college’s May 22 commencement ceremony on the Oceanside campus.
Also this spring, music instructor Matt Falker, was named a quarterfinalist for the Recording Academy and GRAMMY Foundation’s Music Educator Award.
