The sun shone down as hundreds of people paid their respects to iconic Wrexham photographer Les Evans, in a funeral as unconventional as the man himself.

Former Welsh internationals, Wrexham managers, players and local press combined to pack out the crematorium in Pentrebychan for a service full of jazz music, folk songs and tributes to the popular 74-year-old who died of cancer on May 1.

In a nod to his beloved Wrexham FC, the only hymn of the service, Guide me o Thou great Redeemer was altered with the chorus changed to “Wrexham Lager, feed us till we want no more”.

Tributes were led at the pulpit by funeral celebrant Martin Baldry who said: “Les was a true one off. It’s not easy to sum him up in a few well-chosen adjectives.

“He pursued his passion with enthusiasm.”

Mr Baldry went on to explain how Les’s love for music came early and he was nearly expelled from school for bunking off to see Bill Hailey and the Comets at the Wrexham Hippodrome.

He added: “Les wasn’t just a supporter of Wrexham FC, he was a supporter of the town as a whole.”
