Virtuoso violinist and Brazilian music pioneer and expert Ted Falcon has had several music mentors in his life, but none has a more special place in his heart than his father, Allentown guitarist Marvin Falcon.
"I grew up listening to my dad give guitar lessons and he was always working," Ted says. "He was always one of the best musicians I knew."
Ted loved just sitting and playing music with his dad a their home in Allentown, but his dad — who has learned thousands of songs in a long, storied career — was always trying to teach his son something new.
"I was like, Dad, can I just play something I know?" Ted recalls during a telephone interview from a tour stop in San Diego. "My dad is one of the smartest guys I know."
Next week, Ted will return to the Lehigh Valley for the first time in five years. He and Marvin will celebrate by sharing a performance — perhaps two — with the public at Ambre Studio, a gallery and event space in Bethlehem.
The concert will feature in equal measure types of music they both love — Gypsy Jazz and Brazilian Samba.
Gary Lader, who plays piano and accordion with Marvin in the Barrel House Brothers, a three-piece early jazz combo that appears regularly at The Bookstore Speakeasy in South Bethlehem, suggested Ambre Studio as a good spot to host the reunion performance.
Impressed with Ted's resume and his music, gallery owner Evelyn Beckman — who was already familiar with Marvin's musicianship — quickly agreed to host and sponsor.
The venue only has room for about 50 seats and the show is booking quickly, Beckman says. A second show may be added.
