The Sidney Bechet Society, Ltd.® was formed in July of 1997. Its charter is to promote the music inspired by Sidney Bechet. Our first jazz concert featuring Bob Wilber and Benny Waters, was named Concert of the Year by Joe Klee in the Mississippi Rag for the year 1997. The same honor was extended to our jazz concert in 1998 and 2001. We continue to present some of New York’s highest quality traditional jazz, this year returning to The Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space, at 95th & Broadway, with five top notch shows.
Monday, October 14 – 7:15pm — Evan Christopher’s Clarinet Road
Evan Christopher, New Orleans-based ambassador of the Creole clarinet style, returns to The Bechet Society stage for what has become an annual event to honor reed-master, Sidney Bechet.
For 2013, a duo CD release from pianist Eli Yamin, Louie’s Dream: Celebrating Our Jazz Heroes anchors the program. Inspired originals, choice standards and Bechet rarities delivered with refined heat and drive aim to convey the essence of the artists they most admire. Joining Evan and Eli are vocalist Hilary Gardner and cornetist Randy Reinhart. BassistThaddeus Exposé and drummer LaFrae Sci round out the rhythm section. As an extra treat, Louis Armstrong alumnus Marty Napoleon, composer of the tune “Louie’s Dream”, makes a special appearance.
