Jackie, Butch and jazz galore
The University of the Incarnate Word Jazz Ensemble, with Jim Waller at the helm, knows how to stage a blowout jazz concert. The UIW music department and Trinity University radio station KRTU are teaming to present A Night of Jazz on Broadway tonight (Thursday) at 7 in the UIW Fine Arts Auditorium. Tickets, $5-$75, are available at www.uiwjazz.com and at the door.
Waller and company have put together a stellar jazz lineup: The UIW Jazz Ensemble (veterans of the Montreux Jazz Festival), John Magaldi and the Primetime Jazz Orchestra (celebrating their 10th anniversary), ace drummer Butch Miles, vocalist/trumpet player Johnny “Johnny P” Panzarella and guitar wizard Jackie King.
King, a San Antonio native based in the San Francisco Bay Area, grew up with Doug Sahm, and headed to San Francisco at Sahm's urging. A left-hander, King, whose main instrument is a Gibson Byrdland, grew up on a steady diet of Western swing and big-band blues à la T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown.
As a player, King has worked with Willie NelsonChet Baker, Sonny Stitt, Merl SaundersJerry Garcia, Rick Derringer, Johnny Bush and dozens of others. King has released several albums as a leader. A new one, recorded with piano legend Marian McPartland, is slated for release soon.
King also is a first-class, common-sense guitar teacher. King operated the Southwest Guitar Conservatory here for several years before he got too busy with gigs. While in town, he'll do a couple workshops, including a music-business workshop at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at UIW.
For guitarists, and others, who want to learn about improvisation, King will present “Improvisation for Guitarists Which Can be Used by All Musicians” from 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday at Guitar Tex, 4330 McCullough Ave. Cost is $40. Call 210-822-1595.
Waller and UIW are not forgetting about the drummers. Featured guest drummer Miles has kept time for the Count Basie OrchestraMel TorméTony BennettGerry Mulligan, Clark Terry and plenty of others. At some point, Miles will face off with Primetime drummer Joe Caploe, a multifaceted percussionist and educator with a world of chops, for a drum battle.
“A Night of Jazz on Broadway” promises to hit just about every jazz lick.
