Jazz Voice

  • Critics choice
This year's London Jazz Festival opens with the traditional, spectacular vocal-led opening night jazz extravaganza, with its usual mix of unique collaborations and surprise guests. Set to trumpeter/arranger/composer Guy Barker's painstakingly constructed (and often inspired) original score, Jazz Voice is always big, bold and beautiful.

Mehliana: Brad Mehldau/Mark Guiliana

  • Critics choice
Top US pianist Mehldau is almost as well known for his archly philosophonical sleevenotes as for his highly classical, Bach-influenced style of composition and improvisation. His Bill Evans-ish style has produced wonderfully oblique takes on Nick Drake, Radiohead and Soundgarden, and a disturbingly good version of Oasis's 'Wonderwall'. Tonight he continues to blur the boundaries between jazz and – well, everything else – by teaming up with incredibly talented drummer Guiliana for an evening of free improv that will likely run into the realms of D&B and dance-funk.

John McLaughlin/Zakir Hussain – Remember Shakti

  • Critics choice
All-time great guitar maverick McLaughlin reunites with the greatest living tabla exponent, Zakir, to celebrate their 40-year personal and musical relationship. The duo revisit their delicious fusion of eastern and western music, with help from vocalist Shankar Mahadavan, U. Shrinivas on mandolin and V. Selvaganesh on kanjira, ghatam and mridangam. This is a rare opportunity to witness the staggering interplay between these two masters first hand. Expect blistering, edge-of-your-seat improv and astounding virtuosity.

Ketil Bjørnstad/Kari Bremnes – The Story Of Edvard Munch

  • Critics choice
Norwegian Renaissance man Bjørnstad is a one-man art movement, with parallel careers as a poet, novelist and internationally acclaimed jazz pianist: he has more than 20 novels and 30 albums to his name. His glacially beautiful piano playing tonight paints a musical portrait of Norwegian painter and printmaker Munch.

Gilad Atzmon

  • Critics choice
A witty, Israeli-born multi-saxist and clarinettist, Atzmon specialises in a high-octane, Roland Kirk-ish brand of hard bop, with a garrulous, on-the-edge improvisatory style. He's here to look back on his extensive repertoire.

Genre-straddling prolific composer Bley is regarded as one of the foremost composers in jazz. Here she appears in a trio setting with Swallow and Sheppard for a rare UK live date.

Madeleine Peyroux

  • Critics choice
If you missed out on tickets to see Peyroux at Ronnie Scott's in April and May this year, then here's another opportunity to hear her jazz-literate, pleasantly low-key blues/folk/country songs. The Gallic-American songstress is deeply influenced by the likes of Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell, and will draw from her new album 'The Blue Room' with her distinctive, smoke-tinged and bluesy drawl.
