Free music festival changes format to include more genres

The Little Apple Jazz Festival, an annual event since 2005, has changed formats this year to include more genres of music. This year’s first Little Apple Music Festival, organized by the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department and the Union Program Council, will feature jazz, blues, country and indie music in a free, family-friendly event this Saturday in City Park.

Erika Davis, senior in psychology and summer co-chair for the Union Program Council, said they had conducted a survey at last year’s event to see what people wanted and found that many people were interested in including more genres of music, especially blues.

“We thought if we opened it up, it would appeal to more students,” Davis said.

Davis said she likes indie music the best and was particularly excited to see Deer Daniel perform this year. Jenna Boutte, junior in public relations and summer co-chair for UPC, said she was looking forward to seeing County Road 5, a country music band that also performed at this year’s Country Stampede.
