Maybe you've seen a lot of people in town, rolling big basses around. They're here for the International Society of Bassists. It is a week filled with great jazz and classical music. More than 1,000 musicians are taking part. One of them is a legend.
News10NBC's Janet Lomax spoke with Grammy Award winner and Eastman School of Music grad Ron Carter.
Carter will take the stage Tuesday night. Carter is one of the most influential bassists in jazz history. He's been playing for six decades with other legends like Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.
He's kicking off a five night series of classical and jazz bass concerts. He's in Rochester for the International Society of Bassists, hosted by the Eastman School of Music. All kinds of musicians from professionals like Carter to students coming from all over the world.
Carter graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1959. He is an educator at heart and says the ISO Conference is important.
Carter said, “Given the way music is going these days and the fact that there is no music in most elementary schools and junior high schools, an organization like this has enough membership to help young people find out what other music is available.”
And he says coming back to Rochester is like a homecoming, but jokes, things have changed.
