In the Arena section, I interview Boz Scaggs on Memphis (429)—his new album due Tuesday that features covers of his favorite songs and taps into the Al Green sound. Our freewheeling conversation touches on how Boz selects songs to suit his distinctive voice and why he's still trying to outrun his 1976 megahit album Silk Degrees. (Go here)

Also for Arena, you'll find my preview of the new Jimi Hendrix album—People, Hell and Angels (Legacy), a fascinating collection of previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1968 and '69 that's due Tuesday. Here, the guitarist was experimenting with new rock sounds that included jazz, funk, blues and R&B. I interview co-producer John McDermott and bassist Billy Cox, who played with Hendrix in the Army and on the Chitlin' Circuit before becoming a member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys.
