Composer/Guitarist Skip Heller Launches "Hardly Strictly Jazz" Column at All About Jazz

Genre-bending musician and longtime friend of All About Jazz, Skip Heller has launched “Hardly Strictly Jazz," a monthly column that focuses on great music that doesn't fit comfortably in a categorical box. If you're someone who prefers music to categorical boxes, this column is dedicated to you.

We're kicking the column off with a look into a document that embodies the great American pioneering spirit: Sun Ra: The Eternal Myth Revealed Vol. 1. We hope this sets the tone for a look into some very rewarding music that doesn't get its fair consideration.

About Skip Heller
Skip Heller was born in Philadelphia and came up in that city's rich music scene before moving to Los Angeles in the 1990's. As a guitarist, he has played with Wanda Jackson, NRBQ, Bob Dorough, Phil Alvin, Dave Alvin, Yma Sumac, Lalo Guerrero, and more. He has composed music for film and TV including the Bernie Mac Show, the Flintsones, and Dexter's Laboratory, and as a journalist he has written for everything from the Los Angeles Jewish Journal to Cool and Strange Music. He lives in a tiny apartment in Hollywood.
