Blues singer Ruthie Foster ready to "Let it Burn" at The Attucks

By Sam McDonald, smcdonald@dailypress.com
Powerhouse blues-jazz singer Ruthie Foster has been winning over fans for years by staying true to her own core values. She started out singing in church choirs in rural Texas, then joined the U.S. Navy Band before heading to New York to pursue a career as a major-label recording artist. When that didn't pan out, she returned to Texas and drew strength from the fertile Austin music scene.

Since then, her reputation has grown steadily. Her new disc, "Let It Burn," was recorded in New Orleans and features Crescent City stars such as George Porter Jr. and Russell Batiste. Tunes include nuggets from John Martyn, Johnny Cash — even the Black Keys. It's set to be released Jan. 31. Get a live preview when Foster performs at the Attucks Theatre in Norfolk 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14. Local singer Narissa Bond opens. Tickets are $29 from Ticketmaster.
