Rani Singam, the lawyer turned jazz
singer, is releasing her second solo album, Contentment, on Wednesday.
Ten years after leaving a career in law,
the 40-year- old singer - who'll appear at the Esplanade's Recital Studio for
two gigs this week - reflects on how law prepared her for the music scene, and
what it's like to live her dream.
Looking back, was your career switch
difficult?
After seven successful years in law, I
had to deal with a significant cut in income.
My former bosses also tried relentlessly
to get me to stay.
But everything else seemed to go very
smoothly.
I was able to utilise skills I'd learnt
as a lawyer in my new career.
I was used to "performing" in
public (in court) and putting aside time for rehearsals came easily because, as
a lawyer, I often have to rehearse for court appearances, too.
What can we expect from the album,
Contentment?
It's made up of 80 per cent original
compositions and has a contemporary jazz sound. What is the title track about?
Performed in a swing style, the song is
a life story about a change of paths. I was content as a lawyer, but when I
chose to follow my passion, that was when life became even better. I want
people to relate to the lyrics about living a life of passion beyond (mere)
contentment.
