All that jazz

By Carolyn Johansen / For the Monitor

Can't decide which type of music is your favorite? There's no need to - crossover is the name of the game next week at the Concord Community Music School. Its annual Jazz Department Workshop Series, which takes place Monday through Wednesday, allows musicians of every age and level of experience to explore, experiment and learn.
The workshops will be held at the school, 23 Wall St. in Concord. The entire program is free and open to the public and requires no pre-registration. Workshops include Beatles Orchestra, Jazz Vocal Workshop, Percussion Workshop (African drumming), Build a Band, and Drone Workshop. In addition, the Turtle Island String Quartet, winner of two Grammy awards, will give a lecture and presentation.
Jazz Department Chairman David Tonkin said that the school has hosted these workshops for 10 years, drawing about 100 people each year. Age is never an issue - they have had children as young as 6 and adults as old as 97. The goal is to broaden musical interest and experience among musicians of every background.
"It's one of the things that we try to do," he said. "Instead of just being for the jazz department, it's a chance to mix all the departments together."
Tonkin receives plenty of support for this concept from Peggy Senter, the school's president and founder.
"The future of music is that there aren't these very distinct genres," she said. "We set that as a strategic plan goal a long time ago. We have this treasure in our faculty knowing each other so well; our students benefit by learning in all the styles (classical, folk, and jazz)." - http://www.concordmonitor.com/article/291467/all-that-jazz?CSAuthResp=1320940638%3Ack0rbtj5ppf3rp8171aohirhq2%3ACSUserId%7CCSGroupId%3Aapproved%3A2536A2899AAACD0493C465C1973D1C9B&CSUserId=94&CSGroupId=1
