One never likes to stereotype, but when it comes to
art lovers, odds are they like jazz music, too. That’s why the “A Masterpiece
in the Making” Art Festival and Show is held in conjunction with the 3rd Annual
Jazzin’ Tiffin Festival Sept. 10 in Tiffin. The former event takes place along
the scenic Sandusky River on Frost Parkway, while the latter will be held in
the nearby Rotary Park.
“What we try to do is get our name out there, have some fun, give out some cash prizes and ribbons,” said “A Masterpiece in the Making” Show Coordinator and Tiffin Art Guild and Gallery Board Member Judi Henderson. “It’s free to the public, so they can come and learn about the art gallery, buy some art and hear some live jazz music.” There will be some musicians well known in the jazz circles performing. Jazz and art seem to go hand in hand together. The people who enjoy jazz music also enjoy the fine arts, so we partner with them at the same venue with hopes of doubling our efforts on drawing a crowd.”
That crowd is expected to be in the 1,500 to 3,000-person range, with a few dozen vendors showing off their wares. Areas of focus among the artists include photography, landscape paintings, glass (stained, fused and engraving), sculpting and woodcarving. Henderson said the vendors’ list will be shy of the 50 artists the festival can handle, blaming high fuel prices from keeping artists away. Still, there will be plenty of offerings. In fact, there’s a reason why creative folk are traveling in from a 250-mile radius: $500 for best of show, $300 for first place, $200 for second place, $150 for third place and $100 for honorable mention.
Music-wise, the performance roster features the University of Tiffin Jazz Band, Heidelberg University Jazz Band, Deon Yates, Chuck Loeb and Alexander Zonjic & Friends. Naturally there will be something in store for the kids - you know, future van Goghs, Ansel Adams and such.
“We have a make-and-take art and craft tent that’s free to the public,” Henderson said. “The supplies are all paid for. All they have to do is show up, make a few things and take them home with them. We select two or three different crafts or art projects and try to have it encompass three or four different age groups. Then we have volunteers in the booth helping the kids out to choose whatever craft they want to do. And actually they could do all three of them if they want. Also, if the parents want to browse, the children can stay in the arts and crafts tent to work with our volunteers.”
Finally, on the same note, Henderson stressed “A Masterpiece in the Making” Art Festival and Show is a family event, which means there are some artistic creations that won’t be found at the one-day affair.
“It’s something to get out and do that could broaden your horizons, and if you’re an art person you might get some ideas,” Henderson said. “But we do try to keep it family friendly, so not too crazy. We don’t want any sci-fi, scary-looking art in there or X-rated stuff. It’s just good art and great music.”
