The premise for Jazz Canvas is simple: A swingin'
jazz trio, a guest performer and a visual artist share the stage for a two-hour
performance. Throughout the course of the show, the band does its thing and the
artist creates a painting in response to the music being played. Both the music
and the painting are immediate in nature. It is the ultimate improvisational
interplay of mediums.
Jazz Canvas is the brainchild of drummer Terry Marsh and artist Leigh Knowles Metteer. After presenting a few jazz performances in Knowle's Poulsbo studio, the two came up with the concept of an experiential event that infuses live jazz with a visual element. Each show in this monthly series features Marsh and his band (which includes his wife Traci on bass and Josh Mason on piano), a guest instrumentalist or vocalist and a painter. Audience members enjoy a full-sensory performance and have the opportunity to win the finished painting in a raffle at the end of the evening. Suffice to say, this is a fun and unique opportunity to introduce more art fans to jazz and visa versa.
I am honored to be the guest vocalist for the upcoming performance on July 16th. This will be the first time for a Jazz Canvas concert to be presented in Seattle. I'll be sharing the stage with the Terry Marsh Trio. Leigh Knowles Metteer will once again be on canvas. We'll be playing at the uber slick new wine bar Urban Enoteca, which is located in So-Do, right next to the Daniel Smith art supply store, interestingly. Urban Enoteca serves exclusive wines from eastern Washington vineyards and has a delectable small plates menu. The plan is for Jazz Canvas to become a monthly event at this gorgeous new nightspot.
My hat is off to Marsh and Knowles for their innovation and their collaborative spirit. The Jazz Canvas series gives artists-both visual and musical-an opportunity to share their work with broader audiences. Conversely, audience members have a chance to witness the fusion of two very different mediums in a relaxed and beautiful setting. This seems like a winning formula all around.
Performance time for this show is 7-9 pm. Tickets are $30.00 a person. Urban Enoteca is located at 4130 First Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98134. For reservations, please call 206-467-9463.
