NEWS
April is Jazz Appreciation Month, so don’t forget to spread the word about Latin Jazz in every way possible - it’s a wonderful time to turn people onto this music that we love. If you’re looking for some recommendations for your favorite Latin Jazz newcomer, send them to LJC and have them check out the Latin Jazz JAM Sessions. Over the course of the month, we’ll be exploring 30 albums that have been significant points in the history of Latin Jazz.
One of the reasons that the Smithsonian Institution chose April to serve as Jazz Appreciation Month is the abundant number of jazz musician birthdays that fall within the month. This year, Jazz Appreciation Month aligns with a significant occasion, as one of the Latin Jazz world’s living legends celebrates his 90th birthday - percussionist Candido Camero will hit nine decades on April 22nd, 2011. Bobby Sanabria and The Manhattan School Of Music celebrated Candido’s legacy this past Friday with a concert that looked back through a number of highlights from Camero’s career and including the elder musician playing alongside the band. Blogger David Reich caught the show and had some very positive things to say about it over at his site My 2 Cents. Makes me wish that I was in New York! You can check out his thoughts HERE/.
On the other side of the country, another major percussionist took the stage, this time to premiere a ground breaking new work. As part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival’s Spring Season, John Santos and his sextet debuted their latest large-scale project Filosofía Caribeña at the Herbst Theater. The concert included a number of guest artists, ranging from poets and dancers to Puerto Rican vocalist Jerry Medina. In preparation for the event, the San Jose Mercury News interviewed Santos, getting the scoop on the piece, his group, and more. You can check out the interview HERE.
In support of the same concert, Santos and his sextet performed live on a local Bay Area radio station, KPFA 94.1. The show includes both a performance and interview - great stuff that you should really hear. The show will be available to stream until Wednesday April 6, so act now; you don’t want to miss this. You can check it out by going HERE.
Emma Taylor posted a great list of the 30 Best Blogs For Jazz Students this week - a fine resource to celebrate Jazz Awareness Month. You’ll find LJC on there, but you’ll also get a taste of 29 other wonderful sites that celebrate music from all corners of the jazz world. It’s definitely worth checking out - you can find it HERE.
I discovered an interesting site this week, Radio.Video.Jazz, with regular entries on both jazz and world music - everything from Gretchen Parlato to tuba players from around the world. Interesting stuff that may interest you - you can check out the site HERE.
