The release of “A Second Chance” introduces the music world to Dorothy Leigh, a powerful new singer with a soulful voice, very expressive style, and ability to interpret any lyrics in a meaningful and heartfelt way.
She grew up in a musical family, which included her older sister who sang with Dionne Warwick and other artists. “I grew up in a large family. We used to sing duets and background behind each other. I loved Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick and Barbra Streisand. My dream was to be an accomplished singer.”
As a child she sang, and took piano and violin lessons; however, Dorothy's career went in a different direction. She attended Long Island University and Adelphi University, focusing on her academics. She had a successful legal career that found her working with major corporations and law firms. “Working in a demanding legal career did not allow me much time to sing, but I did perform occasionally, when time permitted.”
Dorothy’s opportunity to pursue her dream came two years ago. At a cross roads in her life, she returned to her first love, singing. “I had not sung much over the last few years.” Studying with and working beside Juanita Fleming and Janice Robinson, Dorothy was now ready for the world to experience her gift.
Her debut work, titled “A Second Chance,” captures the essence of her amazing talent and reflects the emotional depth and breadth of her life-altering journey. Dorothy worked closely with producer Alva Nelson, who years earlier had been her pianist. Nelson composed some of the songs on the CD, arranged all of the music, and chose the musicians and background singers.
Dorothy, who is the CD's executive producer and lead singer, performs all ten songs, including originals by Alva Nelson, Juanita Fleming, and Janice Robinson in collaboration with Dorothy. The music is adult contemporary that is a hybrid of jazz and R&B.
“All three of the songwriters knew that I had what it takes to give their songs life,” says Dorothy. “The lyrics can really touch people's lives. We were also very fortunate to have worked with some of the very best musicians in New York.”
Throughout A Second Chance, Dorothy displays a most beautiful sound along with a swinging and soulful style. A Second Chance will rocket Dorothy into the domestic and international spotlight. Clearly, Dorothy Leigh has a great musical future.
