Keith Spera, The Times-Picayune
Boogaloo music, a highly danceable synthesis of Afro-Cuban rhythms and elements of R&B, broke out of East Harlem in the 1960s; teens across the country danced the mambo until the craze burned out. Four decades later, New Orleans’ Los Po-Boy-Citos has picked up the boogaloo torch.
Clave rhythms figure prominently on the band’s new CD, “Brand New Dance,” an intermingling of classics of the genre (“King of Latin Soul,” “Either You Have It Or You Don’t”) and four original compositions written in the classic style.
The easy groove on “Now You Know” would not be out of place on an Iguanas record. Indicative of New Orleans’ ever-simmering musical melting pot, the “Brand New Dance” title track checks Eddie Bo’s “Check Your Bucket” and Archie Bell’s “Tighten Up”; on “Jala Jala/Fire,” the band’s horns vamp like the Rebirth Brass Band caught in a tangle of percussion. Los Po-Boy-Citos perform for a CD release party Saturday at the Blue Nile.
