Season Opener of jazz series at Dicapo Opera Theatre

Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 4 pm

The Dicapo Opera Theatre, Lexington Ave @ 76th Street, NYC

Ted Rosenthal – piano, Noriko Ueda – bass, Tim Horner – drums

This concert features music from “Impromptu,” Ted Rosenthal’s new CD release on Playscape Recordings.  http://playscape-recordings.com/index.php?news

Impromptu is a set of Rosenthal’s reimaginings of classical themes by Brahms, Schumann, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and more, for jazz trio. "The sound was maddeningly familiar. A beautiful ballad melody spelled out by a pianist with perfect mastery of the legato line — Surely this was a standard I just couldn't recall. But it was Chopin's Nocturne in F minor, played by the Ted Rosenthal Trio on their new CD, Impromptu." - Jon Garelick - Boston Phoenix
There will also be a dialogue with WQXR radio personality Terrance McKnight about genre bending and other areas where jazz and classical music meet.

Jazz at Dicapo’s season will continue with 3 more concerts:

Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 4:00 PM "Piano Starts Here"

Jazz at Dicapo concerts have won audience and critical acclaim.  Of the Jazz at Dicapo concert, “Images of Monk,” All About Jazz wrote: “This is the year for numerous Monk retrospectives. The concert that I found most intriguing was held in a series dubbed Jazz at Dicapo, with Ted Rosenthal.

<http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/musician.php?id=3920>  as artistic director.  In one flashing performance, it provided a glimpse of Rosenthal's singular vision—his ability to distill the musical idiosyncrasies of other writers while injecting his own ideas into an entirely new piece.”

Co-founded in 1981 by Michael Capasso and Diane Martindale, Dicapo Opera Theatre presents a full season of opera productions, musical theater, concerts, dance, jazz and other events in its own 204-seat facility located on the lower level of St. Jean Baptiste Church on East 76th Street.

Ted Rosenthal has performed worldwide, both as a leader and as a sideman with many jazz greats, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and James Moody.    A first-prize winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Rosenthal has released 12 CDs as a leader.

His CD The 3 B's, music of Bud Powell, Bill Evans and improvisations on Beethoven themes, received a 4-star review in DownBeat.  A recipient of three grants from the NEA, Rosenthal composes large-scale works as well as jazz tunes.

He composed music for Uptown, for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, premiered in its ’09 –’10 season at NY City Center and now touring throughout the world.  He is currently composing his 2nd jazz piano concerto, commissioned by the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony with whom he will perform it in New York City in May, 2011.  http://www.tedrosenthal.com
