As in, or following, some of the musical production of George Lewis, Michael Dessen plays the trombone using the computer to process this in real time. Its two working tools have become so inextricably linked that the musician California adopted the term "digibone" to refer to what they do, joining the two instruments in one.
That does not mean we can not hear it on trombone in acoustic context or make summaries with your "laptop". All these perspectives are evident in the trio that recorded the album "Between Shadow and Space", now with Dan Weiss replace Tyshawn Sorey on drums. The framework of these is quite explicit on this issue with Clean Feed label: to combine the matter Dessen african-American tradition with the techniques and type of sound experimental music.
This equation results in an electroacoustic jazz that is as inventive as the daring and elegance and compositional sense. In line with what is being increasingly common, many of the references in this project are extra-musical: what Dessen invites us with the support of Christopher Tordino (bass) and Weiss inspired more poetry, painting and science than trends in organized figures or patrons of jazz, despite having as a master Yusef Lateef, Anthony Davis and the aforementioned George Lewis.
Another characteristic of his music is solid evidence that supports conceptual explained by the fact that "digibonista" also engages the theoretical writing about music and culture. But beware: this does not imply that the hearing of this group is difficult - on the contrary, before we get to the head now we're reacting to it with the skin.
On August 12, jazz on Thursdays receives Sei Miguel (trumpet, writing, direction) showing compositions especially adapted for this condition, with the participation of musicians Speech Mariam (trombone alto), Peter Gibson (guitars), Rafael Toral (e) and César Burago (percussion).
