Three decades into her career, singer-songwriter Sam Phillips has seen most of what the music industry has to offer -- she even spent her early years as a Christian performer. For her latest project, The Long Play, she decided to wander off the beaten path for a while.
Rather than release a standard album, Phillips began an ongoing project that chronicles the process of writing and releasing new music. Starting last fall, she began offering a subscription service through her website: For an annual fee, her fans receive a new digital EP every two months, as well as a steady stream of videos, essays, photos, audio logs and whatever other form Phillips decides to channel her creativity through. Phillips stopped by the WXPN studios a couple months ago, and she checks in once again to play new material and provide an update on how The Long Play is progressing so far.
