McCoy Tyner
Jazz piano legend McCoy Tyner will be joined by his trio and special guest alto saxophonist Gary Bartz for one night only at the Highline Ballroom in New York on Sunday, August 23. Tyner is celebrating the release of his latest CD on McCoy Tyner Music/Half Note Records and first solo recording in almost a decade titled Solo: Live From San Francisco, scheduled for an Aug. 25 official release. As a youth, Tyner was catapulted into the spotlight for his role in the John Coltrane Quartet, and at the Highline Ballroom, he will effectively pass the torch to another young pianist, the up and coming New Orleans native Jon Batiste, who Tyner has invited to perform as the opening act with his band. At the young age of 22, Batiste’s versatility, incredible musicianship and understanding of the music’s history prove that the future of jazz is in good hands.
