Michelle Lordi sings in a way that is uncommon today: simple, straightforward, direct, and conveying the emotions in the way we all do: in our voice inflections. No gimmicks. This is a style that emerged in the swing and cool jazz eras, a strict adherence to the tune that virtually vanished as singers began to add embellishments, scat, and too often a hysterical emotionality where personality crowded out the melody. In particular, Lordi owes something special to Chet Baker and Blossom Dearie. Baker sang with ultra-cool understatement, while Dearie, who accompanied herself incredibly well on the piano, emphasized swing and added an element of innocence. Cool uncorrupted understatement that swings is a way to describe Lordi's vocal style in a nutshell. Her voice is clear and never shrill, her diction is flawless, and she uses almost no vibrato. So what you get is the pure unadulterated song.
Lordi is graced to have two outstanding musicians to accompany her: Tom Lawton, a master of the piano and all its possibilities; and Aleck Brickman, a bassist with a precise yet lively rhythm that grounds the music and keeps it moving at the same time. You'll rarely hear piano accompaniment of a vocalist that is as good as Lawton's. One has to refer to Alan Broadbent's way of working with Irene Kral to find another example where the pianist is imaginative and evocative and yet complementing the singer so well rather than sticking out and intruding. This makes the album a pleasure to hear from beginning to end.

The native New Yorker is a newcomer to the NYC jazz scene and will no doubt be a fixture in the greater music community for years to come. She will be performing selections from the diverse range of jazz genres: from swing to bossa nova. Accompanying her for this intimate music celebration will be Taber Gable on piano.

1. Muñeca (Doll) This piece features an animated ⅝ rhythm loosely based on the Venezuelan merengue and a tonal but yet very dense harmonic language. It features Ryan Keberle on trombone solo, mastering the complex harmonies and rhythm, while keeping his solo very emotional and melodic. Like "Push Gift" (track 8), this tune is largely based on motivic development. Most of the music here can be traced back to the first 5 notes of the main theme played by the saxes after the introduction.
2-5. Angela Suite This four-part suite is dedicated to my second daughter, Angela, and attempts to express the many and profound feelings that emerge when one becomes a father. It uses several traditional rhythms from Argentina. First, the cueca, then the zamba, and finally the chacarera, all in 6/8 but each with a very distinct character.
After a brief chaotic moment, a clear sky emerges, which quickly turns into an emotional storm. Next, La rabiosa is a frenetic and aggressive piece that depicts a very angry woman (I refrain from explanations here!) Carl Maraghi captures the essence of this tune with his baritone sax solo. The last section, which I consider an extended and dramatic coda, combines most of the musical elements presented in the whole suite, all together at last, with a strong sense of forward motion in the rhythm as well as in the harmony. This section demonstrates with pride the virtuosity of the ensemble.
Portico - Living Fields
Whether they want to be associated with it or not, Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick and Jack Wyllie have a history of making fascinating records. Along with Nick Mulvey and ‘Quartet’ on the end of their name, they came into the world with their Mercury-nominated first album Knee Deep in The North Sea: a beautiful modern jazz record which held in its folds the same moody ambiance and delicate structure that seeped through all their records since. With Mulvey departing to pursue what’s become a successful solo career, second LP Isla was to be the last from the original line-up. But in his place Kier Vine and an incredible 3rd LP was the first suggestion that the band had interests outside of jazz.

Moderna Tradição - an encounter of veteran master musicians performing the choro - instrumental music created in Brazil at the end of the XIX century and still very much alive and growing today. Performed by a quintet having the slightly unusual instrumentation of mandolin, soprano-sax, guitar, piano and percussion. The performances are full of life and display impeccable musicianship, colorful arrangements, and many beautiful themes. The five musicians - Izaias De Almeida on mandolin, Nailor Proveta on soprano (doubling on clarinet), acoustic guitarist Israel de Almeida, pianist Benjamim Taubkin, and percussionist Guello are widely respected in Brazil.
Filled with musical beauty, melodic improvising, very attractive tone colors, and a memorable ensemble sound, New Old Music is a delight.
The CD was released in Brasil by Núcleo Contemporâneo and in United States by Adventure Music. In 2008 it will be release in Europe by Connecting Cultures.

Three Fab New Jazz Albums

I'm often asked by friends and acquaintances at dinners and parties for recommendations of new jazz albums. The question is typically followed by a halting look, like, "Oh, yeah, I forgot, you only write about stuff from the 1940s and '50s." Believe it or not, I listen to a ton of cutting-edge new jazz. The problem is very little is of interest to me or worth telling you about. Of the 50 new CDs I receive each week, I fall in love with just two or three and hang onto them until my roundups. In some cases I need to let you know about them right away.
That's the case today. Here are three new sensational jazz albums and audio clips—proof that it's possible to dig Charlie Barnet and Clifford Brown as well as music that's going down now. These will surely be on my list of favorites this year:
Marc Cary—Rhodes Ahead Vol. 2 (Motema). Marc Cary plays Fender Rhodes, access virus (a synthesizer) and Hammond B3, and is deeply influenced by the hypnotic electronic jazz Herbie Hancock made famous in the 1970s. It's a saturated sound rich with mood and textured improvisation. Cary is accompanied by Tarus Mateen on bass, Terreon Gully on drums, Sameer Gupta on tabla, Igmar Thomas on trumpet, Jabari Exum on djembe, Daniel Moreno on percussion, Sharif Simmons on vocals, Arun Ramamurthy on violin, Burniss Travis II on bass and Aurelian Budynek on guitar. A album that brilliantly weaves together punch, purpose and pulsating electronica. Go here.
Reggie Quinerly—Invictus (Redefinition). It's easy to draw parallels between Reggie Quinerly's group and Bobby Hutcherson's groups in the mid-1960s. Drummer Quinerly's music has that sound, especially with Warren Wolf on vibes, Yotam Silberstein on guitar, Christian Sands on piano and Alan Hampton on bass. The quintet has a crystalline clarity and modern energy. All of the tracks but one was composed by Quinerly, and his music soars in the hands of this accomplished group. An album with deep intellect and vision. Go here.
Ben Williams—Coming of Age (Concord). Bassist Ben Williams wrote and arranged nearly all of the songs on this album. He's joined by saxophonist Marcus Strickland, guitarist Matthew Stevens, Christian Sands on piano and Fender Rhodes, Masayuki “Big Yuki” Hirano on synths and Fender Rhodes, drummer John Davis and percussionist Etienne Charles. I love the sparkling, brooding feel here and the electronic touches. There's a '70s inspiration at play, but Williams keeps it contemporary with strings, gorgeous use of the electric piano and power drums. Due April 6. Go here.
