Peggy Lee was one of the first female pop singers to fully understand how to wrap the camera around her finger. As visually presentable as any of her peers, there were little things she did with her eyes and mouth that melted hearts. In addition to smiling while singing (not easy), she'd frequently look off to the left and right with hip glances while her mouth dropped down in one corner to grab notes. Her expression also changed a few times in any song, which was exciting. As a result, it's hard to take your eyes off of her as you try to figure out how the magic trick is done. And that voice—it's like the low, slow whistle of a far-off coal train.

I'm looking forward to reading James Gavin's new biography of Lee (Is That All There Is?: The Strange Life of Peggy Lee), which will be pulbished Nov. 11 (go here).

2015 Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival

Jon Turney previews next March's Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival, which had its programme launch this week: 

A re-creation of a Louis Armstrong big band concert is the latest fruit of Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival’s deepening relationship with New Orleans, and will be a Sunday afternoon highlight of the Festival’s third edition next March.

It is just possible a few punters will have heard the Armstrong All Stars play at Bristol’s Colston Hall in 1962, but this will be something new even to them. A 17-strong ensemble will play scores made available by the Louis Armstrong House museum and last aired in 1947. The concert will also feature New Orleans musicians Lillian Boutte, vocals, Evan Christopher on clarinet, and banjo and guitar player Don Vappie, plus at least one yet to be announced guest, and narration from actor and singer Clarke Peters, who has a concert of his own the previous day.

The Armstrong connection will be sealed by a two-week residence in the city for Armstrong House archivist Ricky Ricciardi who will tour local schools as well as presenting rare Armstrong film footage at the Festival.

The other distinctive offering is a new project for the Big Buzzard Boogie Band and the Bristol Jazz Festival Chorus performing songs from Disney movies under the banner of Cartoon Jazz.

 Dr John strengthens the New Orleans theme when he closes the Festival on Sunday night with his first show in Bristol for a dozen years.

Bill Wyman’s nine-strong Rhythm Kings should ensure a full house for the late show on Saturday.

More contemporary sounds come from Andy Sheppard’s European quartet, playing material from their forthcoming new ECM recording, and Dave (Edition Records) Stapleton’s Slowly Rolling Camera.

Last year’s popular swing dance big band session is reprised as a Festival opener on Friday night, when none-dancers can enjoy trumpeter Nick Walter’s Paradox Ensemble, and there are bluesy contributions later in the weekend from Mike Sanchez, festival returnee Matt Schofield and Aynsley Lister.

All-star alumni of the Gil Evans Orchestra reunite to celebrate the band's "Monday Night At Sweet Basil" era. Between tours, Gil's freewheeling, hi-energy band made it's home base in Greenwich Village during the '70s - perhaps it's "golden age" - during which the band won Grammys for "The Music Of Jimi Hendrix" and "Live At Sweet Basil", recorded on one of those Mondays. This lineup of dynamic NYC players were there, all of them internationally-known sidemen and band leaders. The credo is the same as Gil's was 30 years ago: Let's see where the music can go. And yes, they'll be playing Hendrix tonight - and recording the show.

There was a time in the late-1940s and early '50s when Jo Stafford was America's most popular female singer, eventually matched only by Ella Fitzgerald. The maternal warmth of Stafford's voice, her soulful tones and her relaxed sense of swing made her a favorite of white and black audiences. With the advent of TV in the 1950s, Stafford was given a live show in 1954 and her grace and take-charge charm easily won over audiences.

After listening yesterday to my favorite Stafford album, Swingin' Down Broadway (1958), I decided to nose around at YouTube to share the joy with you. [Photo by William P. Gottlieb]
