There’s a reason why Tom Wilson and the other members of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute are thrilled to be partnering with The Charles Hotel’sRegattabar for their new Jazz Masters Series. Along with the chance to play in what is easily Boston’s best jazz club, each show gives BGJI’s talented students the chance to take the stage with a jazz legend and showcase their talent.
“I'm so fortunate and humbled to [perform] next to people who have influenced my perspective about music in life,” said Wilson, a saxophonist with the group. “They help you to see how to cultivate that which you may not have yet realized in yourself.”
Tonight, the Jazz Masters Series hosts its second show, featuring drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, a Berklee alum and professor; the series’ inaugural show, featuring acoustic bassist John Patitucci, took place on Jan. 31. Each show concludes a day of master classes for BGJI students, taught by that night’s guest.

“BGJI is a performance program designed to foster creativity and musicianship through various musical disciplines,” the Institute said in a press release announcing the series. The program “provides a comprehensive contemporary music environment where students are given opportunities to explore their creativity to the highest level possible, advance the power of music as a tool for the betterment of society, and connect musical creative thinking with the natural environment.
