letter from Ron Kadish ....

Hi Claudio,
Daughter of one of the few Viennese-trained Korean opera singers, violinist Maureen Choi took her classical chops to Spain, where she learned to chill, go with the flow, and play music, not chops. Now a Berklee prof, she's managed to combine her newfound Iberian soul, Spanish flamenco, and those chops (she has 'em for days!) into a tasty musical smorgasbord.

The Maureen Choi Quartet tours the US this summer, with dates in Chicago, Baltimore, Queens NY, Ann Arbor MI, and Akron OH. They'll be playing from recent release Ida y Vuelta.

Collective presents best of jazz

Professor Salim Washington will perform at UKZN.

by Lauren Walford
THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN presents The Sankofa Band on Wednesday 26 April at 6pm.

The Sankofa band is a true representation of moving forward while looking back. With matured sounds honouring the traditions of jazz and sounds of today that tell stories of modern day life, this collective of South Africa’s great jazz musicians are led by Professor Salim Washington.

For this special ensemble, Professor Washington brought together musicians whom he feels share his sentiments about music and life – on piano is jazz pianist, Nduduzo Makhathini, on drums is Ayanda Sikade and offering a strong bass line and life to the music is the young and gifted Dalisu Ndlazi.

The strong horn section is made of great horn players who have performed and toured with internationally recognised jazz musicians – Trumpter Syanda Zulu, Leon Scharnick on alto and tenor saxophone and the multi-reeds man himself, Professor Washington on tenor saxophone, flute, bass clarinet and the oboe.

#ArtHodes and The Metropolitan Revue

 · by Andy Lanset

Jazz pianist, publisher and educator Art Hodes (1904-1993) took over hosting WNYC's Metropolitan Revue jazz show from Ralph Berton on April 6, 1942. The weekday broadcast specialized in playing jazz records by pioneering musicians. The longer Saturday broadcasts showcased many of the same performers live in the studio. Among them: Eddie Condon, Max Kaminsky, Pee Wee Russell, Brad Gowans, Bill Davison, George Wettling, Miff Mole, Tony Parenti, Mezzrow, Red Allen, James P. Johnson, Leadbelly and Charles 'Cow Cow' Davenport.
Writing in the December 1972 Esquire magazine, Hodes described his year-long stint as host and disc-jockey.
Lunch is on you; so is carfare.  They do furnish the needle.  You bring your own records. But if you want the music to live you got to do somethin' about it.  So there I am; a six-day week.[1]
Hodes would later expand on this in his 1992 memoir explaining the half-hour weekday slot and hour-long Saturday afternoon shows.

Record Store Day 2017

Record Store Day 2017: A Reminder That Americans Still Buy Music

SOURCE: HYPEBOT

April 21, 2017

Did you know that one in three vinyl buyers also pays for an on-demand music subscription? Even in the age of streaming, many still want to touch, feel and own their music. Proof of that is just hours away during this Saturday's Record Store Day.

Guest post by Russ Crupnick of MusicWatch

Saturday April 22 begins the second decade of Record Store Day, an event celebrating the independent record store. In a world of streaming, digital files and music discovery apps, Record Store Day takes me back to days of hopping on a bike for a trek to the record shop on Merrick Avenue (our Main Street). The day is renowned for special releases, particularly on vinyl. This year will feature a Bruce, a Bowie and a Busta.

ALBUM REVIEW: HITE, “Light Of A Strange Day”

ALBUM REVIEW: HITE, “Light Of A Strange Day”

Rob Ross
APRIL 17, 2017
Getting out of my “comfort zone”, this debut album from the artist Hite, is something different for me and is as interesting as it’s intriguing.  Julia Easterlin, who is Hite, did her earlier work by combining looping and layering her voice to create her music. On Touristes, an album done under her own name in collaboration, she began to move away from what she calls “the looping artist pigeonhole”.  The current incarnation of her work, Hite, is more of a vehicle for lyrical expression.

This record, Light Of A Strange Day, she says, “is a natural progression, away from loops and into more flexible, expressive forms of storytelling. In the making of the album, I left behind all my familiar tools (loops, computer, effects pedals, rhyming lyrics) and played only acoustic instruments; one take, one mic, open ended, stream-of-consciousness. It was a completely different approach to music making, and releasing it under the Julia Easterlin name (which is so attached to loops and upbeat, poppy vocal music) felt somehow… dishonest. It’s been a decade since I wrote my first piece of looped vocal music, and I needed a fresh new home for my new music; so different from previous work.”

The songwriting process further explained, “In all my other work, I’ve recorded the music after having performed it at a number of shows. I know how it lands with a live audience, I know if it’s something people enjoy hearing. For Light Of A Strange Day, the songs were barely formed when I brought them in for recording.”  And for this first entry as Hite, the Georgia-born artist has sculpted something fully-formed and refreshing to these ears.

Music review: #FiniBearman, Traverse Theatre

Rob Adams, Folk & Jazz critic
FOR A song dealing with inspiration’s failure to materialise, Fini Bearman’s The Idea doesn’t half blossom in performance. London-based Bearman is more of a singer-songwriter than a conventional jazz singer and as a performer she’s very much part of a five-piece band rather than a singer with a rhythm section, a point that comes across particularly when she uses rhythmical vocal lines to build the mood alongside finely judged guitar vamps from the subtly impressive Nick Costley-White.

Bearman’s own lyrics may often address timeless issues such as broken romances but she lives in a modern world where screensavers, for example, enter her muse unselfconsciously and with a warm, clear and expressive voice she brings a sense of realism and even practicality to her storytelling style.

Charlie Watts to receive special honor

Charlie Watts to receive special honor at UK's Jazz FM Awards later this month

Besides being a rock legend, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts is a well-known jazz aficionado, and he now will receive a special honor called the Gold Award recognizing his lifetime contribution to the genre and to blues music at the 2017 Jazz FM Awards. The ceremony, which will be held April 25 at Shoreditch Town Hall in London, is presented by the U.K. digital radio station Jazz FM in partnership with the music-event production company Serious.

"I am very grateful to be honored by Jazz FM for my contribution to Jazz and Blues," says Watts in a statement. "I've always loved and been influenced by the music and its players. It was one of the reasons I wanted to be a musician myself. It's still important that we continue to support this music to ensure it lives on for the next generations."
