Great Voices in Harlem

Posted on February 10, 2015 by Margaret Porter Troupe

About The Gloster Project

The Gloster Project was created out of the simple idea that kids do best when they have access to education, and we believe that the arts give children a bigger sense of the world, and ultimately, a bigger sense of themselves. The arts also teach reading, writing, editing, listening, speaking, performing and most of all – critical thinking. We firmly believe that exposure to the arts, culture, and history should be available to everyone, especially to kids in chronically underserved areas like Gloster, Mississippi.

Leonard Feather

Steven A. Cerra
"Leonard Feather has dedicated his life to the development and propagation of jazz, mainly as a distinguished journalist and critic. This book, compiled from his diaries, documents his varied experiences in the jazz business as musician, songwriter and record producer. We are all fortunate that he has chosen to share his rare experiences with us.Benny Carter, Jazz saxophonist, composer-arranger, bandleader

I recently came across a copy of Leonard Feather’s The Jazz Years: Eyewitness To An Era. The paperback version was published by DaCapo Press in 1987. Over the years, I had misplaced mine and I found a very fine used copy on offer at a local bookstore.

The young clerk who helped me complete my purchase asked me if “He was anyone important like Bing Crosby?” “How did you learn about Bing?,” I asked. “Oh, he was featured on TV program that was broadcast on public television recently," he replied. "Whad'ya think of him?," I asked. "He was a pretty cool dude," he said. He smiled at the look of stunned amazement that must have come over my face at his response.

My reply to his question about Leonard Feather was something along the lines of this quotation by the distinguished Jazz author Gene Lees:

"Leonard Feather is the most important critic and chronicler jazz has had. He has written about the music longer—uninterruptedly since 1934—and more consistently than anyone else in the world.”

I think my description of Leonard’s importance in the world of Jazz had about as much impact on the bookstore clerk as the viewing of the Bing Crosby TV program that he had viewed as part of his studies, but I was glad to have Leonard’s book in my library so I could re-read it and share some of his singular memories with you on these pages.

I was fortunate to be in Los Angeles when Leonard was hired in 1965 by Charles Champlin, the Entertainment Editor of The Los Angeles Times, and charged with contributing regular features about Jazz to the newspaper. It was always a delight to read Leonard’s columns which appeared in that paper twice weekly and in the expanded Sunday edition as his writings were insightful and instructive. If Jazz can, as some say, be learned and not taught, then I learned a lot about Jazz from Leonard.

In addition to contributing many articles about Jazz to select periodicals beginning in the 1930’s, Leonard Feather was the author of numerous books on the subject, including his standard reference work Encyclopedia of Jazz [which has since become co-authored by Ira Gitler], Laughter from the Hip (with Jack Tracy, the former editor of Downbeat and record producer for Argo, Emarcy and Mercury), and Inside Jazz, all published by Da Capo Press.

Anita Lane ....

Artist Biography by Erik Hage
Photo: Dilworth, Joe
Anita Lane rose to prominence through her association with former boyfriend Nick Cave and contributed lyrics to such Bad Seeds and Birthday Party recordings as "Kiss Me Black," "From Her to Eternity" and "Stranger Than Kindness." She also appeared on tracks by Barry Adamson, Einsturzende Neubauten and Mick Harvey.

Her sporadic solo career began with the four-song EP Dirty Sings, which showcased Lane's bruised vocal style. 1995's Dirty Pearl was an odds-and-ends collection of tracks that Lane recorded over the period of a decade. Cave and various Bad Seeds members make appearances on the release, as does Einsturzende Neubaten.

Bad Seed Mick Harvey produced much of the effort and Barry Adamson contributed to the arrangements. 2001 saw the release of Anita Lane's first fully-realized studio LP, Sex O'Clock. The (almost) danceable and poppy effort was made in collaboration with the invaluable Harvey, who provided music and instrumentation. (Some of the musical arrangements are tape loops of Bad Seeds jams from the mid-90s.) The album also featured a cover of Gil Scott-Heron's "Home Is Where the Hatred Is."

The Tides of Life

The Tides of Life
Friday, 15 August 2014
I am excited and grateful to be able to announce the release of my third album! „The Tides of Life“ will be published on the 31st of October by the wonderful Munich-based label ENJA. I am presenting a thematic cycle of six pieces of music. The titles describe six emotional conditions in opposition to each other. In their order, just like ebb and flow, they insinuate a familiar dramaturgy and in this case tacitly suggest optimism. Failure, Desperation, Rage, Calm, Hope, Triumph.
I love the quintets of the 1960s. Records like Miles' „Nefertiti“ or Herbie Hancock's „Maiden Voyage“ have elevated my understanding of music in a most powerful and important way. It was that period of Jazz that opened my ears for the large universe of music this world provides. While I have experimented much in style throughout the past years, I wanted to refer to my favorite epoque in Jazz history with this, my third record.

When I work to make my sonic ideas audible to the rest of the world, I look for individuals who understand my composition and who understand how to explore it as improvisers. This recording features the masterful improvisation of Rich Perry on tenor saxophone, Victor Gould on piano, Anthony Pinciotti on drums and Gordon Au on trumpet.

Funeral for Jazz Legend Clark Terry

WHERE: The Abyssinian Baptist Church

Officiated by: Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III - 132 Odell Clark Place *
(West 138th Street between Lenox Ave. & Adam Clayton Powell Blvd.) New York, New York 10030

WHEN: Saturday, February 28, 2015 -
10:00 a.m.

The services will take place on Saturday to send home our beloved Clark Terry.  Clark peacefully went home to God on Saturday, February 21st in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, surrounded by his family, students and friends.  He was known internationally for his signature musicianship and gratitude for his love from many.  For nearly half a century, Clark's greatest passion was helping to make young musicians' dreams come true.

He was a tremendous source of inspiration, of love, of respect, of decency, and of human rights.  He was one of the first recruits of the United States Navy when black musicians were given the Rating of Musician in 1942.  From being one of the few musicians who played as a featured soloist in both the Count Basie and the Duke Ellington Orchestras, to being the first black staff musician at NBC, Clark had multiple bands including big bands, youth bands and other ensembles.  He was one of the most recorded jazz musicians in history on more than 900 albums.

Clark's devotion towards mentoring young musicians influenced the lives of worldwide master talents such as Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis and Dianne Reeves amongst countless others.  Clark inspired everyone by example.  As he was quoted in the documentary about his life and love for mentoring students, Keep on Keepin' On, "Your mind is a powerful asset.  Use it for positive thoughts and you'll learn what I've learned.  I call it getting on the plateau of positivity."

Clark will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Cemetery following the service. Funeral services entrusted to P.K. Miller Mortuary, Pine Bluff, Arkansas and George H. Weldon Funeral Home, New York City.

Joe Morello - In A Big Band Setting

Steven A. Cerra
“The music on this album represents Joe Morello at his peak, and shows off some sides of his playing that have been relatively undocumented. Here was a drummer who was equally at home with small combos and big bands; a drummer who could handle the most complex time signatures and who was equally adept at straight-ahead swing; a drummer who had as much technique as any drummer who has ever lived, but who always put the music first.”
- Rick Mattingly, insert notes to [Joe Morello RCA Bluebird- 9784- 2 RB]

By any standard of measurement and without the need for any hyperbole, Joe Morello was a phenomenal musician who happened to express his genius on drums. And despite the incomprehensible derision he endured from some members of the East Coast Jazz Establishment  - “He didn’t swing.” [?!] - he was an exceptionally brilliant drummer who swung his backside off.

Anyone who has ever had anything to due with the instrument in a Jazz environment, simply understand this - Joe was incomparable.

While we are fortunate to have many recorded examples of his playing in small groups, especially those he made during a three years association with pianist Marian McPartland’s Trio [1953-1956] and those made as a member of the “classic” Dave Brubeck Quartet [1956-1968], sadly, there are too few recordings of his extraordinary drumming in a big band setting.

The following insert notes by Rick Mattingly to Joe Morello [RCA Bluebird- 9784- 2 RB] provides some explanations for this void.

“It was the early '60s, and the hottest jazz group going was the Dave Brubeck Quartet, who had achieved the rare distinction of having a number-one hit on the pop charts. The tune was called "Take Five," and its two main points of interest were the 5/4 time signature and the drum solo, played by Joe Morello. The record epitomized the "cool jazz" of the period, and Morello was the ideal drummer for that era. His style was firmly rooted in the swing and bebop traditions, but Joe was also a schooled performer who had studied with George Lawrence Stone of Boston and Billy Gladstone, snare drummer at Radio City Music Hall. Morello's polished technique, combined with the odd-meter time signatures favored by the Brubeck group, gave his playing an intellectual quality that fit right in on the college campuses where the Brubeck Quartet enjoyed much of their success. With his glasses and generally studious expression, Joe even looked somewhat like a college professor.

Among drummers, Morello was highly respected. When he first arrived in New York in the mid-'50s, his first order of business was to check out all of the local drummers. Stories are still told about how he would approach a drummer and ask about some little technical trick he had seen that drummer pull off. The other drummer, often with a patronizing air, would demonstrate his lick for Joe, who would then say, "I think I see what you're doing. Is this it?' — thereupon playing the drummer's lick back at him faster and cleaner.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – FEBRUARY 2015:  Two brothers from the land down under have been spending countless hours working on a new blues/pop release that is sure to take listeners by the ear with one listen.  Hailing from Melbourne, Australia the pair (Mark & Luke Finn) performing as FINN have created a sonic experience entitled ART&ESPIONAGE.  A lot went into the making of this release and it had high expectations after their 2011, 15track LP album release “FROM THE WELL”.

'Art&Espionage' shows a huge step forward since 2011 showing that the band's potential to expand their sound is evolving into something of major artist caliber. FINN takes the best from their favorite artists and influences such as Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Jeff Buckley, JJ Cale, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash.  They are storytellers and do it with ease as you can hear on this new cut.

"Art & Espionage was a reflection of the idea that all great artists are thieves. Good ones borrow, and great ones steal. I think it was Picasso who said that...or maybe T.S. Eliot...who also probably got it from someone else! The aim with this album was to steal from as many of the great artists that we grew up listening too, and make something that was a unique combination of that. Hopefully that comes through, and people can trace the influences, one way or another."  ~ FINN
The two stepped into the studio to record at Melbourne's BLACK PEARL STUDIOS with producer Terry Hart of Maestro Productions.  The band brought on Joe Carra of Crystal Mastering to lend his professional ears to the ever so important mastering of the album. With this team something special was created and crafted over those days which would become the album you hear now.  The band took careful consideration picking their first single release off the album and officially will have the track “CITY LIVING” as the kick off track for press consideration.

The band evokes a range of emotions that truly can connect with any listener regardless of social class or gender.  This ability in not only their writing talents but also their impeccable instrumentation truly blends with the lyrics in a symphonic ease - it's just a straight up enjoyable album to listen to. No fluff or anything fake about it, which is what the music industry needs more of these days.  Art&Espionage is a straight cut record that delves into the simplicities of one's life.  FINN's ability to connect with their listeners marks them for a band to be put on your radar for 2015 artist's to watch.

The band is currently accepting requests for album reviews (digital copies available upon request) along with interview and booking requests. For more information the band can be reached via their publicist at:

Troyka: Ornithophobia - Album Review

Cormac Larkin
Fri, Feb 20, 2015
When Liebniz suggested that music was the pleasure the mind takes from counting without realising it, he was probably talking about the gratification of a well-resolved Baroque cadence. What he would have made of this British trio’s polyrhythmic tricks is anyone’s guess.

Serialism, psychedelia, spoken word, prog-rock, ambient, trip-hop and math-metal: all are deconstructed by pianist Kit Downes, guitarist Chris Montague and drummer Josh Blackmore, with some interventions from producer Peter Eldh, and reformed into dense sound- scapes that ebb and flow with hypnotic irregularity. Rhythmic complexity is the brave new world of improvised music; if you want a primer on where the younger generation are headed, Troyka should be on your reading list. naimlabel.com
