A Piano Fantasy in Jazz with Barry Harris and Valerie Capers

Two of the legendary names of jazz: NEA Jazz Master pianist Barry Harris and jazz pianist, composer, and the first blind graduate of Juilliard School Valerie Capers play together on stage for the first time, joined by Ray Drummond on bass and Leroy Williams on drums. NEW! Pre-show Members Lounge at 7PM

This video is part of a collection of videos which Frans Elsen recorded during workshops that Barry Harris gave at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague between 1989 and 1998. Frans Elsen was a very important Dutch pianist, arranger and educator of Jazz. He and Barry shared a mutual appreciation of each others music and were close friends. This material has been edited and selected by Frans himself. It gives a unique insight in Barry's wonderful ways of teaching and his extraordinary musicianship. Please visit http://www.franselsen.com for info about Frans Elsen and his musical legacy. There is a special reference to these videos on that website. These videos are an important historical document of one of Jazz music's finest and foremost musicians and educators.

Barry Harris Live in Rennes

Photo: Susan Reeves
The bebop pianist Barry Harris communicates elegance and erudition in all that he touches, but he's also a decidedly old-school jazz foot soldier, committed to breezy wit and companionable slang.

Live in Rennes (Plus Loin) finds him in excellent form at a festival in Brittany, France, last fall, not quite six weeks before his 80th birthday. He's working with what amounts to a good pickup rhythm section, and he's rummaging through his carry-on for repertory: songs by Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker, with a few originals and songbook staples mixed in.

The album nicely captures his blend of the casual and the courtly, including his banter with the audience. It's a document worthy of Mr. Harris, and an appetite-whetting prelude to his next trio engagement at the Village Vanguard, from July 20 through 25 (villagevanguard.com).
