Capitol Records / Duke Ellington

Marc Myers researches the architecture for the Capitol Records building in Hollywood, an iconographic landmark often believed to have been inspired by a stack of vinyl records whereas, as Myers finds out, the architect Lou Naidorf didn't even know the client's name when he handed in his plans which came out of his late 1940s graduate thesis ( Wall Street Journal). --- We were alerted of a highly informative rehearsal tape in which drummer Sonny Greer explains the rhythmic intricacies of Duke Ellington's "Echoes of Harlem" during a recording session with Cootie Williams and his Rug Cutters from January 1938 ( Vimeo).

... what else ...

Michael Rüsenberg reports about the Jazzforum of the Union Deutscher Jazzmusiker last week in Cologne ( SWR2 Cluster), and Jan Tengeler attends the event's symposium about "jazz and health" ( Deutschlandradio Kultur ). --- Tom Reney talks to the saxophonist and scholar Loren Schoenberg about the Savory collection at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, as well as about his work for Benny Goodman (sound file, NEPR).

Letter from Jeff Greene

Hi Claudio,

I'm writing to see if you're interested in covering the newest album from Cameroonian bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Richard Bona.

Best known for his work with Harry Belafonte, Chick Corea, and John Legend, Bona's latest album Heritage, his eighth, is the first one with the Afro-Cuban band "Mandekan Cubano." The music explores the alchemy of African rhythms in Cuba, tracing the roots of Cuban music back to their origins in the Mandekan empire of the 15th century and earlier, before the slave trade and colonization split Sundiata's unified kingdom into so many parts.

Please let me know how I can help in your coverage of this project!
