Jacksonville University presents Jeff Coffin and the Mu’tet

The Mu’tet is led by Jeff Coffin, saxophonist from Dave Matthews Band. Also a composer, educator, author, and 3x Grammy winner, you likely know Jeff from his 14 year tenure with the genre-defying Bela Fleck & the Flecktones (1997-2010). The group’s name stems from the word ‘mutation’, clearly reflecting Coffin’s philosophy that music must continue to change and mutate in order to grow. The band strives to expand themselves, as well as their fans, with music influenced by the deep, earthy wells of funk, jazz, African, New Orleans, Indian, folk, electronic, Gypsy, rock, Brazilian and other musical cultures around the world.

Roy ‘Futureman’ Wooten – drums, percussion

There's jazz and creative music happening early and often throughout this week in St. Louis, and so to help make sure that you don't miss anything, here's a special early edition of the weekly highlights post:

Tonight, trombonist Jim Pugh is in town for a free concert at at Maryville University presented by the St. Louis Low Brass Collective. Pugh is best known for his work with Woody Herman and Chick Corea, but also has been a top studio trombonist recording for film soundtracks, pop music sessions, and much more. The concert will feature Pugh backed by ten local jazz trombonists, a rhythm section, and the entire trombone section of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Meanwhile, back downtown, drummer Jeremy Haynes and the Rhythm Is Life band will play atLola. Haynes, a St. Louis native who's been part of five Grammy winning gospel recordings, is performing in support of the release of his first instrumental album Prodigal Son 2K.

Also tonight, Three Central gives a free concert at the St. Louis Public Library main branch downtown; and the Tommy Halloran Quintet plays for Lindy Hop St. Louis' weekly swing dance atGrandel Theatre.

Tomorrow night, the Route 66 Jazz Orchestra brings their big band sound to West County at theSky Music Lounge in Ballwin; Sarah Jane and the Blue Notes perform at the Feasting Fox; and the Ann Dueren Trio is at Frontenac Grill.

On Thursday, pianist Amina Figarova (pictured) and her group will perform in a free concert for the Jazz at Holmes series at Washington University. Figarova's skills at writing for small ensembles prompted Jazz Times to call her “among the most important composers to come into jazz in the new millennium." For more about her, and some vidfeo samples of her group in action, see this post from Saturday.

Jeff Coffin

3x Grammy Award Winning Saxophonist & Composer

Jeff Coffin, well-traveled saxophonist/composer, and three-time Grammy Award winning member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and the Dave Matthews Band, rejects all labels and categories other than "music" and "musician." Coffin has traveled the world with the Flecktones since 1997 and with DMB since 2008, performing with musicians of all walks.
Some of those he has shared the stage and the recording studio include such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis, DJ Logic, New Orleans Social Club, McCoy Tyner, Baaba Maal, Mike Clark's Prescription Trio, Chris Thile, Garth Brooks, Phish, Van Morrison, J.D. Souther, Vinnie Colaiuta, The Dixie Chicks, Bob Moses, Konger Ol Ondar, Stanton Moore, Brooks and Dunn, George Porter Jr., Umphrey's McGee, Del McCoury, John Scofield, Yonder Mountain String Band, Marc Broussard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Wailers and many, many others. Along the way, Coffin has absorbed an astounding range of influences. "Whether it be New Orleans Second Line, African music, Indian Ragas, folk songs, Alan Lomax field recordings, jazz, or funk," he says, "the spirit and breath of the music is what I take away from listening and playing. It's what decides for me whether I like it or not."

Known for sometimes playing alto and tenor sax simultaneously, with a nod to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Coffin seeks out the extraordinary in his saxophone sound and in his technique of improvisation. Reaching for the unique is something Jeff makes an integral part of both his playing and teaching. In addition to the Flecktones, Jeff also leads his own group, The Mu'tet which takes it's name for the word mutation, giving way to Jeff's belief that music is constantly changing and mutating. Jeff Coffin has played on hundreds of recordings, and has performed around the world including a 2007 performance at the esteemed Carnegie Hall. As a highly in demand educator, Jeff has presented clinics from Farmington, Maine to Perth, Australia and is also an internationally acclaimed Yamaha and Vandoren Performing Artist/Clinician since 2000.
