Gregory Porter and Jamie Cullum plus special guest Corinne Bailey Rae

Gregory Porter and Jamie Cullum plus special guest Corinne Bailey Rae perform on 17th June
For one night only, Blenheim Palace will play host to a co-headline performance of global jazz superstars Gregory Porter and Jamie Cullum, as well as a special guest performance from singer songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae on Saturday 17th June. The setting for this truly one off occasion will take place in the stunning grounds of Blenheim Palace, within the palace's Great Court.

Returning to Nocturne, Gregory Porter is a talent that spans all ages. A timeless voice that is equally suited to a small jazz bar in his hometown of Sacramento, as it is to the Great Court. With his new album 'Take Me To The Alley' as stunning as anything he's done before, this Grammy winner is now a global superstar.

Co-headlining this concert, Jamie Cullum - a true icon of the UK jazz scene. Whether it's his weekly show for BBC Radio 2, intimate recordings for The Song Society or headline performances at festivals around the world, Jamie is an incredible musician.

Also performing is Corinne Bailey Rae; the Yorkshire born songwriter 2006 with the enchanting 'Like A Star' and chart topping 'Put Your Records On'. Following the huge success of her new album 'The Heart Speaks in Whispers' last year, she tops off an incredible line up of talent for this special evening.

Whilst Cullum makes his first return to Blenheim Palace since his career-defining, sell-out concert in 2004, Porter returns following his show with Van Morrison at the first Nocturne in 2015 and Bailey Rae will make her debut at the world heritage site fresh off the back of a global tour in 2016.

Tickets are on sale on Thursday 16th but for a limited time you can get your exclusive presale tickets now.

Video: Gregory Porter sound check

Posted by Erica Jackson Curran on Sat, May 25, 2013 at 12:56 PM
Gregory Porter won over our critic at his Cistern concert last night. Joy Vandervort-Cobb wrote, "Although Porter has the capacity to riff and scat and holler with the best of them, he is a straight-ahead jazz singer, emotionally and rhythmically connected to the tunes he sings, even as he demonstrates he has the capacity to make the music leap forth." He's got one more show at Spoleto on Saturday night. Check out our video from his sound check for a hint of what's in store. And here's our interview with Porter if you feel like doing a little background reading before the show.

Singer Gregory Porter charms the jazz world

by

While performing last year at the Autumn International Music Festival in Prague, jazz singer and bandleader Gregory Porter gave a tantalizing explanation for his song "Magic Cup," a sultry number off of his 2010 debut album Water: "Either it's about coffee, or it's about a woman. I don't know, actually."
But listening to the way Porter belts out the lyrics — and the way saxophonist Yosuke Sato squeals his way through the solo — it's obvious which one he's referring to. "You're a good time/ Make me feel nice," Porter groans. "You are a perfect mix in the morning/ With sugar and spice." Nobody gets this worked up over coffee.
In an age when few taboos remain, Porter chooses to exercise a little restraint. The result is a throwback of a song, full of double-entendres and leaving listeners to wonder what he really means by "grinding beans and steaming cream."
"Unfortunately, it's not so popular today because people just kind of want to tell you right to your face exactly what it is they're talking about: 'Put your leg on me,'" Porter says, speaking by phone from Brooklyn. "But I'm always intrigued by the clever type of writing that was in the '40s through the '70s. They're saying some of the things you can say today, but they did it in a cleverly crafted way, and they used the full spectrum of the words out there to express an emotion or a feeling of desire."

Gregory Porter: Be Good

Grace and intimacy thread the sophomore offering of one of music's most distinctive young jazz singers. Actually, to call Gregory Porter a jazz singer doesn't fully give his warm baritone its due. On romances like "Our Love," the restrained Porter is supple soul sung simply. On the big, brassy swing of "Worksong," he's electric, hollering blues with a whiff of early Ray Charles.

On the soul pop of "Mother's Song" and the R&B of "Real Good Hands," Porter is a Broadway belter and iconoclastic storyteller. His self-penned songs run unapologetically long and very little here services contemporary radio, but time's passage goes unnoticed with the majesty of each moment Porter and his killer band conjure. His a cappella version of "God Bless the Child" serves as a reminder that honest music still lives and is here to feed the soul.(5 out of 5 stars)
