The Hannibal-LaGrange University’s Department of Music and Pioneer College Caterers will be hosting their annual HLGU Jazz Supper Tuesday, Feb. 21.
The HLGU Band, Jazz Choir and Blues Band will perform from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Hannibal-LaGrange University Cafeteria (located in the Partee Center). The price of admission is $6 for off-campus guests which includes a meal of a salad bar, grilled chicken breast, sliced maple-pecan ham, carved roast beef, parsley buttered red potatoes, parmesan vegetable medley, roasted corn O’Brien and Parkerhouse rolls, as well as Cajun-spiced tilapia, crawfish cornbread, peel and eat shrimp, and rice pilaf.
The HLGU Jazz Choir is under the direction of Jane Griffen. This select group of students will perform a variety of numbers. The vocal jazz soloists included: Katelyn Fray singing L.O.V.E. and Regina Pruitt singing Somthins’ Got Ahold of Me. The HLGU Jazz Choir will sing Take Five by Dave and Iola Brubeck, Aint’ Misbehavin’ by Thomas “Fats” Waller, Moonglow by Hudson DeLange and Mills along with Don’t Get Around Much Anymore by Duke Ellington.
HLGU’s Band is under the direction of Dave Corkern and will play Draw Me Close which will be performed as a slow ballad arrangement and Victory in Jesus performed as a big band swing, arrangement. Some old time gospel sound will be mixed in as well.
Dr. John Booth is the director of the Blues Band. This special group is made up of faculty, staff, and students. They meet for a few weeks prior to the event to learn about Jazz’s “first cousin” the Blues and prepare for the Jazz Supper. The band will perform pieces that are improvisatory as well as standard numbers and a few new creations.
Austin Birkhead will be featured as a guitar soloist, Matt Assel will play the piano and provide improvisatory solos, Jake King will be a vocal soloist and play rhythm guitar. John Booth will play bass and sing a couple of numbers. New to the group this year is drummer Chris Buckles. Some of the numbers that will be performed include: The Blues in “E”, Don’t Think Twice (from “Gatemouth Brown’s Long Way Home album) and Leavin’ to Stay (Johnny Lang) with solo by John Booth, Lie to Me with solo by Jake King.
Student soloists will also perform throughout the program. Victor Matthews will play the piano and sing Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers and will be assisted by Stephen Marquez on the saxophone.
