Straw hats and bow ties
The Brigham Young University Jazz Legacy Band will perform a free concert on Jan. 16, which will feature Dixieland and swinging jazz music. The Mississippi Mood Orchestra and Lemoyne Taylor will accompany the group as special guests of the evening. Musicians donning the Dixieland regalia of flat-top straw hats and white button-ups belt out notes on classic woodwinds and big brass instruments as a singer backs up the excitement on a hand mic.
The evening will swing you with "Yakety Sax" by Homer "Boots" Randolph III and "The Man I Love" by George and Ira Gershwin. "Bare Necessities" by Terry Gilkyson also will be performed.
The concert is open to the public and admission is free. The jazz concert will be held in the de Jong Concert Hall, located in the Harris Fine Arts Building, on the BYU campus and will start at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call (801) 422-ARTS or visit www.cfac.byu.edu/music.
Skyline Chorus concert
The Skyline Chorus will perform a final concert with its current director, Adam Haggart, on Jan 27 in the Provo High School auditorium. After three years of directing the singing group, Haggart led the Skyline Chorus in an unprecedented improvement since its founding in the 1960s. The group now ranks No. 4 in its district and No. 50 among other nationally competing choruses. Tickets for the concert are $10 with a showtime at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.myschoolfees.com.
The search for a new director begins Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Lindon Community Center when director tryouts will be held. An additional tryout session will be on Jan. 21 at the same location and at the same time.
The new chorus director will prepare the group for the 2014 Rocky Mountain District competition at Zermatt Resort in Midway. To schedule an audition, email your request to uvskyline@gmail.com.
Open auditions for performers
The Covey Center for the Arts will host Vocal Sport IV, a singing competition and expo organized to discover new performing artists in song and dance. Participants will audition in front of music industry VIPs and talent scouts.
