In Sync with jazz

One might say that they are on a mission to introduce live-instrumental music in a city, essentially predominated by rock bands and electronic artistes. Keeping in pace with the modern times, and yet retaining the fine nuances of the traditional jazz, Syncopation is a Delhi-based trio conceptualising various facets of jazz music. Comprising guitarist Rishi Sachdeva, double bass player Sahil Warsi (probably the youngest in the country) and drummer Nikhil Vasudevan, this band is making waves. “We find that the term ‘jazz’ carries unnecessary baggage and would like to bypass that through our music. We like to fuse different analog-electric elements into our music and are trying to search for a new sound and trying to move jazz into a new direction,” says Sahil. Founded in 2009, the band plays modern jazz blended with elements of bebop, swing and funk. The band recently launched its debut album titled Tune In. “There are 6 tracks in the album and the styles vary from swing, Latin and funk. The music is soulful with guitar-playing melodies and the double bass with drums providing strong accompaniment.”
Talking about the inspirations of the band, Sahil shares, “We usually enjoy the music of saxophonist John Coltrane, jazz bassists Ray Brown and Scott La Faro, pianist and composer Bill Evans and one of the most influential 20th century jazz musician Miles Davis among others and the list is just endless.”
