Celebrating black history

Black history month celebrations continue around the community.
  St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church will celebrate Black History Month with a Jazz Vespers featuring the music of the Roland Fleming Connection and speaker Dr. Dorothy H. Israel at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
A wine and cheese reception will follow the service.
St. Cyprian’s is located at the corner of M L King Avenue and Lovett Street in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood of St. Augustine.
Dr. Dorothy “Dee” Headley Israel is often referred to as the “matriarch” of the St. Cyprian’s Episcopal congregation.
A professor at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, she retired as professor emeritus after 23 years.
She served in the Health Sciences Center.
She and her husband, Rudolph C. Israel, who passed away in November 2006, retired to St. Augustine, and Israel become active in St. Cyprian’s which, she says, “has provided me with a sense of peace and lifted my spirits to serve the Lord in many ways.”
 The St. Johns River Baptist Association youth department and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church will host a special program at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Hastings. All are welcome.
The St. Augustine Choirs Guild will host A Black History Celebration at 3 p.m. Feb. 26 atDawson Chapel CME Church, 225 N. Orange St.
Trudy Thompson, pastor, will welcome those attending.
All are invited to join in this celebration.
The Tribe of Judah of Greater St. Mary’s Baptist Church presents “A Salute to Our Past and Present” at 4 p.m. Feb. 26.
The public is invited join in this celebration marking the conclusion of this year’s Black History Month.

 Bethel Baptist Church, 22 Riberia St., will present a black history program at 4 p.m. Sunday.
