A 20-year-old Tucson college student is stepping in
to try to keep music in childrens' lives.
Shelby King says classical compositions and jazz
filled her childhood home, and some of her fondest memories are of taking piano
lessons with her father.
When budget cuts shrank chances for Tucson's
low-income children to learn to sing, read music or play an instrument, she
says she had to do something to help.
So she started a program called Tucson Summer Music
where from low-income families learn an instrument for free from a volunteer
teacher.
King started the venture last year while home for
the summer from Occidental College in Los Angeles. She says she thinks fine
arts should be part of every child's education.
